Job description

Volunteer Opportunities

Reporting to the VIPs Coordinator, the VIP (Volunteers in Policing) program requires year-round community engagement with the expectation of regular participation.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to request the date and time of service provided. Based on the availability of volunteer shifts, the Volunteer will be placed in one or more of the following programs and / or events :

  • Special Events : Winter Wonderland, Celebrate Los Al, Street Fair, Spring Carnival, Trunk or Treat, Concert, and July Fireworks Spectacular.
  • Records Department : Assist staff with records preparation, retention, and archiving of existing records.
  • Community Service : Conduct vacation checks, transport of prepared material to and from the Crime Lab (Santa Ana), community patrols, facilitate courthouse deliveries, assist with DUI checkpoints, EOC functions, Neighborhood watch program, and other miscellaneous duties.
  • In addition, conduct tasks that are not associated with the Police Department but are beneficial to the City of Los Alamitos and the surrounding communities. Examples of community service projects include volunteering for special events in neighboring cities, recruitment fairs, assisting local Non-Profits, local races, etc.
  • General Office : Assist staff with vehicle maintenance and other station maintenance.

Desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Listen actively to determine the customer's needs.
  • Always remain calm, courteous, and professional.
  • Possess a basic awareness of working within a defined rank structure
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Highly desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Ability to work within various social media platforms
  • Ability to navigate through various software applications adeptly
  • VIPs must be 18 years or older and pass a complete background check and a DOJ fingerprint check. VIPs must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and be in good standing in the community. All VIPs are required to be CERT trained within a year of appointment.

    Selection procedure : Those candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral interview to evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications.
