Overview
Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects.
Responsibilities
- Prepare engineering designs, drawings and specifications; prepare cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials and equipment associated with construction, contractors, suppliers, installation, repair, restoration and maintenance.
- Provide engineering support to operations staff; review existing conditions and conduct studies by identifying, obtaining and analyzing samples and data; analyze and resolve problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards and specifications.
- Supervise the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and calculations; assign and review the work of subordinate staff and consultants; determine resources necessary to complete assigned work.
- Review plans, permit applications and specifications developed by staff, consultants and contractors; verify quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for engineering projects.
- Prepare and supervise the preparation of a wide variety of technical engineering reports and other documentation; interview, select, train, monitor, evaluate and counsel staff; prepare a variety of bid documents; review and analyze bids; conduct meetings and make presentations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years are equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Mechanical Engineering.Substitutions
Candidates licensed in other states who otherwise meet the minimum requirements but do not possess the required California license may file for this examination and, if successful, will be placed under waiver on the resulting eligible list until the required California license is presented.There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.As a new recruitment for this classification will be opening shortly after the eligible list for this one has been adopted, there is no general waiver available for City and County of San Francisco employees who have six (6) months experience as a 5203 Assistant Engineer, but less than the required experience for this position, to be admitted to the exam process.License or Certificate
Some positions may require a valid driver license.
Working Conditions
Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions and outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods and over uneven surfaces. Positions may require specific schedules including weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and / or overtime.
