Summary Description :

Under the direction of the area manager, the Mental Health Counseling Associate provides individual and group counseling to students addressing mental and emotional health concerns. This role supports psychological well-being through direct services, including crisis intervention, risk assessment, consultation with faculty / staff, and participation in wellness initiatives. Common concerns addressed include depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, low self-esteem, academic stress, and grief.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Experience :

  • Completion of a master's degree in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or a related field leading to licensure.
  • Demonstrated experience in individual and / or group counseling, particularly crisis intervention.
  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload, including high-risk clients and urgent psychological needs.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and disability backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience :

  • 800+ hours of supervised, crisis-oriented counseling experience.
  • Experience working in a collegiate mental health setting.
  • Clearance of Live Scan background check.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing culturally responsive mental health services in a college health setting.
  • Experience facilitating psychoeducational groups or wellness workshops.
  • Overview Duties :

  • Conduct intake assessments for students seeking mental health support or experiencing psychological crises.
  • Provide short-term, solution-focused counseling (approximately 20 hours / week).
  • Facilitate instructional and therapeutic support groups.
  • Coordinate case management, including referrals to community providers for ongoing or specialized care.
  • Engage in crisis intervention, including suicide and risk assessments.
  • Offer consultation and support to faculty and staff regarding student mental health concerns.
  • Develop and deliver workshops, outreach programs, and prevention initiatives on relevant mental health topics.
  • Collect data on the prevalence of student mental health issues and contribute to quality improvement efforts.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation using electronic health records.
  • Participate in program planning, evaluation, and professional development.
  • Train or co-facilitate Mental Health First Aid and QPR Suicide Prevention training for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Contribute content to mental health newsletters or student wellness publications (e.g., Student Health 101).
  • Demonstrate mutual respect and culturally responsive care in all interactions with students, peers, and campus partners.
