Job Title

We're seeking an individual with strong leadership skills, schedule flexibility, including weekends (2-3 weekends per month), and some holidays. Expect a mix of morning, evening, and late-night shifts as we prepare for various events, including setting up equine / livestock panels, tables, chairs, staging, and more. General maintenance skills are appreciated, and previous experience is required.

This is an advanced working-level lead position that schedules and performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work. Responsible for building, facility, grounds, and event conversions & maintenance with a focus on expo halls and meeting spaces or equine and livestock facility spaces at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center (CCACC). This position directs, coordinates, and participates in the general cleaning, setup, and strike down of all conference center events and livestock events. This position oversees daily operations, setups, preparation, and management of events. This is a full-time position working a maximum of 40 hours per week with occasional overtime. Work hours vary according to events held at the facility, late nights and weekends are required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Conference Center Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Exercises direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations, and activities; may include coordinating staff training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the interview and selection process, making recommendations impacting pay, status, and disciplinary action, evaluating performance independently or in conjunction with a higher-level supervisor / manager, and approving time off when needed;
  • Prepares facilities and setups for events / meetings and subsequent teardowns on a daily / weekly basis per the event calendar;
  • Ensures a flawlessly executed event through accurate and timely setup, operation, and breakdown of basic audiovisual equipment per event data sheets;
  • Performs and oversees minor repairs and maintenance on event equipment, facilities, buildings, and grounds;
  • Provides lead accountability for other employees within the department;
  • Plans and schedules work assignments for crews and ensures equipment and supplies are available, including proper safety equipment;
  • Maintains related records and reports;
  • Performs and supervises minor maintenance tasks involving mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and general construction tasks, including repair of windows, walls, doors, floors, ceilings, outlets, plumbing fixtures, air conditioning and heating systems, painting, drywall, etc.;
  • Sets up and repairs event equipment, which may include stages, ramps (loading, entrance, handicap), event-specific paneling (walls, animal enclosures), cable hangers, shelving, bleachers, event-specific floor coverings, barricades and barriers & other similar projects;
  • Estimates the time, equipment, manpower, and leads in developing event set-up timelines; resolves related event set-up problems and adjusts plans as needed to accommodate conditions; leads in the layout of events;
  • Operates and maintains a wide variety of equipment and heavy equipment (including, but is not limited to, forklifts, single and tandem axel trailers, tractors, front end loaders, scissor lifts, and various pull behind equipment necessary in the repair, maintenance, and alteration of the livestock arena, sidewalks, electrical and audio lines, lighting structures, arena footing, and the movement, placement, and erection of materials used to produce customer events);
  • Provides information and directions to the public;
  • Operates, maintains, adjusts, and repairs equipment and tools necessary for performing maintenance tasks;
  • Performs and oversees event setups per data sheets;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and at least four years of supervisory experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities required. Experience in hospitality, maintenance, and / or customer service with the public, and in an event setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skilled in supervisory principles, procedures, and methods, including selection, training, discipline, and evaluation;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to handle heavy equipment, set up furniture, and stand for long periods;
  • Ability to stay organized and manage time effectively to arrange items accurately and efficiently;
  • Ability to demonstrate meticulous attention to detail to ensure furniture and equipment are arranged correctly, following specific diagrams and requirements;
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues that may arise during the event setup process;
  • Ability to work long, flexible hours, including nights and weekends, to accommodate event schedules;
  • General knowledge of Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center policies and procedures, building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment, including the ability to use them economically and safely;
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, schematics, and data sheets as produced by event coordinators;
  • Ability to operate light and heavy equipment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in diverse team environments, effectively coordinating with colleagues, contractors, event organizers, and adapting to a wide range of client dynamics to ensure successful outcomes;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, CCACC staff, and guests.
  • Physical Requirements : This work requires the regular exertion of up to 30 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; loading and unloading up to 100 pounds from trucks; pushing / pulling chair and table racks with handcart; wear uniform at all times; wear proper safety clothing and gear when needed; safely use equipment such as a man-lift, lifting portable staging, work regularly requires prolonged standing, walking, work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work will be variable hours to include late nights, weekends and holidays based upon work load and schedule; follow the policy and procedures set forth by the CCACC. Will be required to perform all job tasks using Federal, State, County, and CCACC safety guidelines and precautions. Stamina to work long hours and to multitask when needed or where applicable.

    Special Requirements : Must be fingerprinted and successfully pass a Criminal History Record Check with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI). Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
