Maintenance Specialist I
The Maintenance Specialist I for the Public Works Downtown division performs intermediate manual and semiskilled work maintaining the cleanliness and repairing the furnishings of downtown streetscapes and trail sections in the downtown area, and performing street and parking lot maintenance work. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Maintenance Specialist Foreman. Shift : Tuesday - Saturday, 6 : 30 AM - 3 : 00 PM. The Town of Blacksburg is an EEO Employer M / F / D / V.

- Performs general downtown maintenance duties which include :
Repairing benches / trash cans / landscape barrels
Replacing brickworkPicking up and disposing of trash and other waste on the streets / trails / sidewalk areas of downtownMaintaining the appearance of the trash corrals, empties trash and recycling cansMaintains the appearance of the streets / trails / sidewalk areas of downtown by using a sidewalk scrubberHelps direct citizens, business owners, and visitors with their downtown questions and needs from the town staffSets up and takes down signage for downtown community events; cleans and restores area after eventsCleans Farmer's Market / park areaHelps maintains downtown landscaped places such as downtown planters and parking lots; runs irrigation at Market Square Park when neededPerforms snow removal responsibilities such as shoveling snow, salting and clearing walks and stairs in the downtown during snow eventsAssists with other projects and related work as apparent or assignedKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance workGeneral knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the standard building tradesKnowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the positionAbility to understand and follow instructionsAbility to perform manual labor for extended periods of timeAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, business owners, visitors, and associatesEducation and Experience : High school diploma or GED certification required and moderate experience landscaping, maintenance or grounds keeping work; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements : Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
