At CVS Health®, you’ll be surrounded by passionate colleagues who care deeply, innovate with purpose, hold ourselves accountable and prioritize safety and quality in everything we do. Join us and be part of something bigger – helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.

POSITION SUMMARY

The CVS Digital Developer Experience organization focuses on building tools, platforms and services that help developers do their best work. Our goal is to provide fast, reliable, secure, and intuitive tooling and self-service automation so engineers can focus on creating great products rather than dealing with unnecessary complexity. We support tens of thousands of developers across CVS Health, and our responsibilities span source control, CI systems, build and deployment pipelines, artifact repositories, development environments, and AI‑powered coding tools.

The Lead Director - Developer Tooling is a hands‑on engineering leader responsible for the end‑to‑end platforms and services that make up the core CVS Health developer toolchain. This includes enterprise GitHub administration, large‑scale GitHub Actions operations, continuous delivery platforms, and artifact management systems. The role also leads modernization work, driving the migration from legacy tooling, including Nexus, GitLab, Jenkins, and Octopus, to our modern vibrancy tools.

This leader is accountable for delivering highly reliable, secure, and consistent CI/CD capabilities at enterprise scale. The role requires deep experience creating and maintaining pipelines that support thousands of workflows and development teams, along with strong operational rigor and a customer‑centric approach. Additionally, the Lead Director will guide the rollout and adoption of AI coding assistants across a large engineering population, ensuring responsible, effective, and secure implementation.

A key responsibility of this Lead Director opportunity is building and sustaining a high‑performing engineering team. The person in this role should lead with empathy, trust, and genuine care, creating an environment where engineers feel supported and empowered. The team’s focus should be delivering exceptional customer experiences for internal developers and continually improving the tools they use every day.

Expectations for the Role

  • Someone who leads with empathy, trust, and care, and knows how to build a high‑performing engineering team
  • A self‑starter who can see the broader vision and prioritize work that delivers meaningful impact
  • Experience guiding the design and delivery of developer tooling and platform capabilities
  • Ability to serve as a senior technical leader across complex initiatives
  • Skill in partnering with engineers, architects, and technical leaders on planning and execution
  • Experience defining long‑term strategy, architectural direction, and roadmaps
  • Ability to define, implement, and enforce SLOs and SLIs across CI/CD, source control, artifact repositories, and platform services to ensure reliability at enterprise scale
  • Ability to drive improvements in workflows, processes, and tool usability
  • Commitment to strong security practices and secure‑by‑default operations
  • A leadership style that uses metrics, observability, and data to guide decision making

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least ten (10+) years of IT or backend engineering experience supporting enterprise systems
  • 6+ years of experience with backend technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and cloud providers such as AWS, GCP and Azure
  • 5+ years of experience administering and scaling GitHub or comparable source control platforms for large engineering populations
  • 4+ years of experience partnering with architecture, product, and program leadership to influence platform direction
  • 4+ years of experience managing enterprise artifact repository solutions such as Jfrog, GAR or Nexus
  • 4+ years of experience managing CI or CD platforms at scale in large engineering organizations
  • 4+ years of experience managing teams with direct reports and leading large engineering organizations across multiple locations
  • Experience leading teams within Agile or Scrum environments

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience managing multiple large workstreams and dependencies
  • Experience with backend APIs and major cloud providers
  • Ability to set a clear vision and translate it into actionable plans
  • Strong understanding of performance engineering and optimization
  • Ability to influence decisions through clear and thoughtful communication
  • History of building strong engineering teams and positive team culture
  • Experience managing developer tools at enterprise scale and reducing technical debt
  • Experience administering GitHub at scale, including access management, automation, and security governance
  • Experience managing GitHub Actions at scale, including workflow optimization, runner strategy, reliability, and cost management
  • Experience operating artifact repositories such as JFrog Artifactory, including repository design, lifecycle governance, and CI integration
  • Hands‑on experience managing CI and CD pipelines at scale, including pipeline design, reliability, performance, and compliance

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree or, equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)
