Alongside carries out its mission through intensive counseling programs in retreat-like settings. Program elements that interact catalytically with each other include the participant community (because the programs are cohorts), beautiful surroundings (inside and outside), psychospiritual educative seminars, small group counseling, and individual and / or couple counseling. A dedicated child, adolescent, and family therapist is available for children, teens, and parents. The child and youth programs are topically aligned with the adult seminars but presented at an age-appropriate level.

Purpose of Position :

The clinical director oversees the planning and delivery of all clinical services at Alongside, collaborating closely with the program director. The clinical director serves as chief steward of the clinical team by :

  • Casting vision and shaping a team culture that is cohesive, creative, and mutually supportive.
  • Ensuring the workplace well-being and effective service of team members.
  • Ensuring the effectiveness of the team at fulfilling its purpose.
  • Recruiting, training, onboarding, and off-boarding members of the clinical team.
  • Reporting :

    The clinical director reports to the executive director and serves as a member of the executive leadership team.

    Position Responsibilities :

  • Shepherding clinical team members to identify, develop, and utilize their gifts in healthy and sustainable ways.
  • Ensuring the clinical teams effective fulfillment of its purpose and responsibilities in accordance with Alongside's mission, vision, and values.
  • Overseeing clinical team-specific duties and providing adequate staffing for Alongside programming.
  • Staffing the clinical team with well-qualified individuals (internal and external) whose vocational goals align with the organization's needs.
  • Resourcing and training clinical team members with all that is necessary for the fulfillment of their roles.
  • Empowering qualified clinical team members through delegation, providing resources and accountability via regularly scheduled check-ins.
  • Ensuring that professional ethics are observed in all clinical work, including organizational compliance with all relevant HIPAA standards and regulations.
  • Maintaining good relationships with leaders of other organizations to strengthen referrals and collaboration.

  • Knowledge of and / or training in HIPAA guidelines for mental health professionals and programs.
  • Availability to be on-call for clinical issues that arise outside of programming hours and lead a response by on-site clinical team members when necessary.
  • Qualifications and Experience :

  • Advanced degree in a mental health fielddoctorate preferred (e.g., Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counselor Education and Supervision, Social Work, or Psychiatry).
  • A Michigan license (or license-eligibility) to practice in a mental health or professional counseling field.
  • A minimum of 5 years in vocational Christian ministry with depth of understanding of ministry culture(s) (at least 3 years of overseas ministry experience strongly preferred).
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience as a mental health provider (10 or more years post-licensure strongly preferred).
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience effectively managing a team of mental health professionals.
  • Supervision skills with discipline-appropriate training and credentialling to aid in the professional development of students, postgraduates, and licensed colleagues.
  • Position Location, Environment, and other Requirements :

    Location of work includes Alongside's campus locations (Richland, MI and Pennfield, MI) as well as periodic off-site responsibilities that require travel.

    Alongside's primary means of carrying out its mission is through geographically centralized transformational retreats. This role requires on-site work at these retreat locations, with few exceptions.

    The clinical director will also be required to represent organizational interests at events that require travel by ground and / or air in changing weather conditions and maintain a valid U.S. drivers license to operate a motor vehicle.

    Additional requirements include :

    Candidates must be able to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, navigate stairs, sit, reach, lift up

    to 50 lbs., stoop, kneel and bend as regular parts of the role. They must be able to remain standing / sitting for long periods of time, use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, keyboard, and mouse, and meet close vision requirements due to computer work. Upon request, the candidate must consent to criminal background checks and pass post-offer drug screening.
