SUMMARY
The Environmental Technician assists with all Environmental Department Programs, coordinating and conducting fieldwork and gathering data related to various projects. This position is also responsible for maintaining departmental supplies and equipment necessary for project / program implementation. The Environmental Technician will perform functions for the Tribal Government in compliance with Tribal policy and Federal Government standards. Federal grants partially fund this position.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Five years of experience working independently in natural resources or related fieldwork OR
- Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resources or related field plus two years of related experience
- Possess trade skills with general construction operations
- Mechanical maintenance experience
- Ability to skillfully operate heavy machinery including, but not limited to, utility vehicles, boats, tractors, and skid loaders
- Experience trailering boats and utility trailers
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, other duties may be assigned :
Develop and implement equipment maintenance and storage schedulesRepair or arrange for repair of equipment as necessary
Maintain inventory of equipment and suppliesArrange the order of supplies and equipment to support fieldwork and other department activitiesMaintain and organize department workshop, storage buildings, and laboratoryConduct fieldwork related to various departmental projects, including; invasive species, woodlot management, water quality, wild rice, lake sturgeon, small and large game surveys, waterfowl surveys, native prairie, ash tree management, etc.Collect and organize field data following established protocols to ensure clear, consistent, and well-documented recordsEnter, organize, and verify field data in Microsoft Excel, ensuring accuracy and completenessUse of GPS equipment to locate and collect dataLead and train field crews of seasonals, interns, and other department staffWork and communicate effectively with Environmental Department staff including via email, text and phone, or in personAssist with educational outreach efforts, including Jijak Youth CampAssist Environmental Department with day-to-day activities, as well as special programs and projectsOTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES include, but are not limited to the following :

Must possess a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and be insurableFrequent(seasonal) non-traditional hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and some holidaysAbility and willingness to travel for fieldwork, meetings, and continuing educationField duties require working in harsh weather conditions, including regular exposure to extreme temperatures, wet and / or humid and other outside weather conditions for entire shifts (including lunch breaks)Ability and willingness to frequently lift up to 75 lbsThis position may be subject to frequent exposure to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, and chemicalsMust be willing to apply chemical pesticides following Federal, State, and Local lawsThe employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and other potentially hazardous equipmentObtain and maintain certifications including pesticide applicator license with aquatic and forestry specializations, boaters safety, first aid and CPR within 60 days of hirePunctual, reliable and willing to work a flexible schedule including a combination of early mornings, overnight shifts, and extended shifts that may exceed 10 hoursPotentially dangerous environments, including fast-moving rivers, poisonous plants, and stinging insectsSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibility. The Environmental Technician may be assigned to oversee the work of seasonal or temporary employees.
