Position Summary

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate, person-centered support to individuals with developmental disabilities or other special needs. The DSP assists clients in achieving their personal goals, increasing their independence, and improving their quality of life while ensuring their safety and well-being in home, community, and day program settings.

Key Responsibilities

Provide daily living assistance, including personal care, hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, and medication support.

Support clients in developing life skills such as communication, socialization, money management, and decision-making.

Implement individualized service plans (ISPs) as directed by supervisory staff and in accordance with agency and state regulations.

Promote community inclusion by accompanying clients to activities, appointments, and events.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including daily notes, incident reports, and progress summaries.

Encourage and model appropriate behavior while maintaining professional boundaries and respect for client rights.

Administer medications and follow all prescribed health and safety procedures.

Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow agency crisis intervention protocols.

Communicate effectively with team members, families, and supervisors to ensure consistent care and support.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework in human services preferred.

Minimum 18 years of age.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (if transporting clients).

Ability to pass background and health screenings per state and agency requirements.

CPR, First Aid, and Medication Administration certifications (or willingness to obtain).

Strong communication skills, patience, and empathy for individuals with disabilities.

Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals as needed.

Working Conditions

Work may be performed in private homes, community settings, or program facilities.

May include evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts.

Requires physical activity, including lifting and mobility assistance.
