Podcasting Teaching Artist About Building BeatsBuilding Beats is an NYC nonprofit that helps young people build 21st-century skills through music production, DJing, podcasting, and creative tech. We run free and low-cost programs across schools, libraries, shelters, and community sites in NYC (and select LA sites), serving youth from elementary through young adult ages.The RoleWere hiring Podcasting Teaching Artists to lead engaging, culturally responsive workshops where students plan, record, edit, and publish short podcasts and radio segments. Youll use browser-based tools like Soundtrap to guide students from idea to finished episode, and model real-world creative workflows. This is part-time, site-based, with after-school and in-school residencies.What Youll DoTeach & Facilitate : Lead podcast units (idea script interview skills recording editing mix publish / showcase) for youth 524, adapted to site age group.Use Classroom-friendly Tools : Teach with Soundtrap or similar tool and incorporate other browser-based tools as needed.Student Outcomes : Each cohort produces a 35 minute episode, talk segment, or mini-series; facilitate end-of-program listening sessions or live showcases.Plan & Adapt : Co-plan lessons that align with Building Beats scope & sequence; differentiate for mixed skill levels; integrate SEL and culturally relevant content.Set Up Portable Studios : We believe any space can turn into a studio - teaching artists ensure clean (as possible) audio capture in non-studio spaces.Assessment & Admin : Take daily attendance in Airtable; create lesson plans for all workshops; administer brief pre / post surveys; attend meetings with site staff and Building Beats admin as needed. Partnership & Communication : Coordinate with site staff; communicate clearly with the BB team via email / Slack; uphold youth-safety norms and classroom agreements.What You Bring1+ year teaching or youth-work experience (school, after-school, camps, or community settings).Practical podcast skills : scripting, interview technique, mic technique, room setup, editing, mixing, exporting, and basic loudness standards.Comfort with recording in DAWs - familiarity with Soundtrap is a plus! Strong classroom management; trauma-informed, compassionate, and culturally responsive pedagogy.Reliable, organized, and on-time with paperwork (attendance, surveys, background check paperwork, etc).Passion for youth voice, storytelling, and creative career pathways.Nice-to-HavesSpanish or other language skills; radio / live broadcast experience; experience supporting students with IEPs / ELLs; portfolio of youth-friendly lesson materials. Ability to teach any of our other subjects : Music Production, DJ or Music Coding.
