Director of Research

Job Summary : Independently manages and provides technical direction in conjunction with faculty director for a complex academic or research program of high visibility. Develops the long-term vision and goals, policies and procedures, as well as managing ongoing of program(s) and oversees a fairly large operational budget to achieve objectives. Responsible for recruiting and retaining industry leaders to partner with research program in achievement of center goals. Develops and manages a membership program for industry partners. Oversees, through subordinate staff, all strategic elements of program administration including establishing program partners. Uses highly specialized expertise in research or academic specific concepts and objectives. The Director of Research at the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) will work under the direction of the BHHI Director to establish and maintain the Program\'s long-term agenda, funding, and objectives. The Director of Research will be responsible for overseeing all administrative, finance, human resources and facilities for the program and will represent the program to outside organizations.
Responsibilities
Main responsibilities include managing and supporting multiple Project Managers in varying phases of research, designing / developing major program components (e.g., grant writing, budgeting, Community Advisory Boards, Institutional Review Board applications and modifications, quantitative, quantitative and mixed methods research design, NIH progress reports, Memos of Understanding and data agreements), and administering the full range of the program\'s operational requirements (planning, community engagement, implementation, tracking progress / meeting milestones, and analysis).
Direct supervision of multiple staff including statisticians, program managers, and field analysts, providing operational guidance across multiple projects.
Manage the Lived Experience Advisory Board (LEAB), similar to a Community Advisory Board.
Point of contact for funders at the state and local level - taking leadership to develop new research and fundable opportunities.
Support the Director of the BHHI research group to determine the future direction of the research group / organizational strategy.
Staff development and morale initiatives for all staff in the research group.
Managing large high-profile research projects with California State Agencies (e.g., DSH, CDII, CDSS).
Managing relationships with California Policy Lab at UCLA and UCB.
Supervising ongoing qualitative research and methodologies for research studies.
Qualifications
Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required.
Master\'s degree or higher in a related area and five or more years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training required.
Academic or research background and recognized expertise in selected area.
Expert oral and written communication skills.
Leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies.
Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia, industry and / or governmental agencies.
Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
Expert ability to work with a dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
Managerial experience and proven success in managing a complex research or academic program(s).
Strong negotiation skills and verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities.
Advanced proficiency with NIH grant applications and progress reports.
Deep knowledge of UCSF systems, security requirements, HR policies.
Advanced proficiency in REDCap survey development.
Advanced proficiency in Dedoose and / or ATLAS.ti qualitative coding software.
Experience forming and engaging with Community Advisory Boards.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong fundraising experience.
