Job description3+ years of experience performing mechanical inspections for building construction Thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in the installation of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems Current ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification Proof of Cal-OSHA 30-Hour Training within the last 4 years Fall Protection and Harness Training Confined Space Entry Training Additional current ICC Certifications as Electrical Inspector and Plumbing Inspector NFPA 70E Standards Training within the last 3 years (preferred) Training and knowledge of NFPA 70, 70E, and 72 Journey-level experience as an Electrician with emphasis on installation and repair of electrical systems in public works, institutional, commercial, or industrial settings Plumbing experience (journeyman or master level) with progression into inspection Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large-scale commercial, industrial, or public buildings Experience ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations on major construction projects Background in projects requiring coordination with contractors, engineers, and city officials Proven ability to identify and address deficiencies and ensure construction meets required standards Openness to learning prescriptive items required by the agency Strong understanding of diverse code requirements Excellent communication and time management skills Inspect construction of airport improvement and utility projects to ensure conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements. Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across building and terminal projects. Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders. Prepare accurate daily inspection reports detailing the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of observed activities, documenting issues or safety concerns in a timely manner. Verify contractor compliance with local and national electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes (NEC, NFPA 70, 70E, 72) and LAWA-specific standards. Track and document time-and-material work , field changes , and job quantities. Validate contractor progress payment requests against approved schedules of values. Support special inspections and testing activities , coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies. Domestic water and sewage systems Venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping HVAC systems : air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork Smoke control systems and mechanical ventilation / exhaust Fire and life safety integration (smoke dampers, suppression systems) Mechanical and plumbing shutdowns, lockout / tagout procedures Commissioning and balancing reports Underground utilities and duct banks High-voltage switchgear and electrical panels Conduit racks, conductors, and grounding systems Interior and exterior lighting systems Fire life safety systems (smoke / heat detectors, FM-200 suppression) Electrical shutdowns and breaker coordination Low-voltage systems (voice / data, security, access control) Door card readers, security cameras, and public address (P.A.) systems Communication cabling and equipment rooms Proficient in Project Management Information Software for inspection and document control, including : Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) PM Web Adobe Pro Bluebeam Comfortable using electronic equipment to manage contract documents, change orders, submittals, RFIs, and inspection records with minimal supervision. High school diploma or equivalent required May assume other duties as required. May be required to work various shifts including days, swings, and nights .

Position Summary
The Mechanical Inspector supports LAWA’s Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) . This position is responsible for ensuring that all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work complies with plans, specifications, permits, environmental documents, and applicable codes.
Mandatory Requirements
- Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector (required to apply)
- Proof of Cal-OSHA 30-Hour Training within the last 4 years (must be provided before assignment)
