Job description

Overview

This position provides casework services for inmates housed in our supplemental housing contracts / agreements. Specific responsibilities include scheduled and nonscheduled travel out of state to ensure that Vermont offenders that are currently housed Out-of-State (OOS) are prepared for successful transition back into the community while enhancing public safety.

The Out of State Corrections Service Specialist manages offender cases within the facility which includes :

  • Assessment
  • Classification
  • Program planning
  • Re-entry planning that follows best correctional practice on security, supervision, treatment planning, continuity of service, and full utilization of community-based resources

All members of the VT Department of Corrections (DOC) Out of State Unit (OOSU) must be familiar with the details of monitoring long term offenders that are either housed in the Federal Bureau of Prisons or at facilities through the Interstate Compact System. In these cases, the receiving state assumes responsibility for the inmate, but their cases must continue to be monitored. OOSU Corrections Services Specialists must be familiar with interpreting state and federal sentences, filing Vermont Detainers on the offenders with the receiving facility to protect Vermont Department of Corrections' interest and to ensure proper monitoring of these offenders. They maintain regular contact with receiving facilities' staff for progress reports, disciplinary reports, medical reports or safety and security concerns of the offender. The OOS Corrections Services Specialist monitors these offenders through the OOSU to ensure the Orders of The Court (Mittimus') and the VT DOC sentencing guidelines through the sentence computation are adhered to.

Corrections Services Specialists within the OOSU maintain the knowledge of security principles for each out of state correctional facility. Should an emergent situation arise, it is their responsibility to respond, as needed, to that facility to provide knowledge or assistance with interviews using trained techniques, counseling, casework, or placement assistance.
