Sanitation Worker

Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License is required.

Performs difficult equipment operation in the collection and disposal of residential and commercial refuse and yard waste debris in the Sanitation Division of the Public Services Department.

Employees in this class operate complex heavy sanitation and debris trucks a majority of the time on an on-going division assignment basis. Work may involve operating the commercial dumpster loader, large street sweeper, automatic side arm residential truck almost full time. Work may involve operating a residential rear loading and / or manual side arm truck a greater percent of time but at this level is in combination with operating the more complex trucks on a regular basis including the boom truck. Work in operation of rear loader trucks includes responsibility of transporting workers to load trash, yard waste, bulk and other items into the packer, and side loaders which pick up roll-out cans. Work requires skill in the operation of heavy equipment in tight spaces, in the dark, and / or on crowded streets around utility lines and vehicles. Work is performed in accordance with established safety rules and regulations, and the employee is held accountable for the successful completion of the route and / or for the safety of workers assigned to the truck. Employees are subject to hazards of sanitation work including working in an outside environment exposure to extreme cold, heat, noise, atmospheric conditions, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, oils, and skin irritates. Work may also be subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by observation for efficiency and effectiveness.

Essential Duties and Tasks :

• Drives assigned residential routes to pick up and dispose of various solid waste from curbsides; oversees the safe working conditions of assigned collectors.
• Operates a side arm or front end hydraulic loader packer or related sanitation equipment in the collection and disposal of garbage, trash, refuse and cardboard from residential or commercial areas of the City.
• Operates rear loader truck and assures safe working conditions of collectors who load various solid or yard waste into the vehicle; assists collectors when needed by pitching garbage into vehicle.
• Operates a street sweeper to clean city streets on regular basis.
• May operate boom truck and leaf vacuum equipment.
• Makes records of times, stops, and unusual situations on route.
• Drives garbage to landfill and recyclables to private recycling facility.
• Performs routine maintenance on assigned trucks and equipment, which includes, cleaning and checking trucks daily to insure safe operations; washes and deodorizes vehicle on a regular basis.
• May answer questions from citizens regarding sanitation procedures.
