Job Title : Heavy Equip Operator

Pos. Type : Part-Time

Reports To : Terminal Manager

Job Summary

As a Terminal Equipment Operator, you will safely operate a range of cargo-handling and support equipment to distribute bulk materials into ships, cargo holds, or warehouses in accordance with operating plans. This role is essential to smooth terminal operations and requires strong coordination with teammates and site leadership.

Operators are expected to maintain situational awareness, communicate effectively, and uphold the highest standards of safety and housekeeping. You’ll be a key part of a team that emphasizes accountability, efficiency, and a “brother’s keeper” mindset—looking out for your own safety and your crew’s.

Responsibilities

Operate conveying systems, ship loaders, dust collectors, fire suppression monitors, and related terminal equipment during cargo loading and receiving operations.
Use diesel / gasoline-powered forklifts, bulldozers, skid steers, pay loaders, excavators, ship gear, and other mobile equipment as needed to support cargo movement.
Follow operating plans and supervisor instructions to complete assignments safely and efficiently.
Conduct pre-shift inspections and identify any equipment issues, damage, or needed repairs—report to the Maintenance Supervisor or Terminal Manager.

Perform basic preventive maintenance tasks, including lubrication, cleaning, replacing filters, valves
Maintain a clean and safe work environment as part of fire prevention and operational readiness.
Adhere to site housekeeping expectations in all work areas, including conveyor tunnels, warehouses, and vessel holds.
Respond to operational issues quickly and effectively, minimizing downtime or disruption
Always verify safe equipment operating conditions before and during use.
Work cooperatively with flaggers, riggers, and team leads to ensure safe movement of equipment and materials.
Participate in all required safety training and comply with terminal safety protocols, environmental regulations, and certification standards.
Demonstrate “brother’s keeper” behavior by remaining alert and looking out for teammates.
Operational Support
Follow all directives from Shift Leaders, Operations Managers, and Terminal Manager to ensure continuous and efficient operations.

Requirements :

Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities

HS diploma / GED and previous crane

Experience operating heavy machinery (e.g., cranes, bulldozers, excavators) required. Ability to respond to issues quickly, safely and effectively in a fast-paced, stressful operating environment

Valid TWIC required

Strong communication skills

Strong situational awareness and ability to work under pressure in fast-paced environments.

Ability to work outside in all types of weather

Must be available to work varied hours, shifts including days / nights / weekends / holidays as required

Physical Requirements

Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening (“fit for duty” certification).

Physically able to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders / stairs on uneven or moving surfaces.

Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.

Required vision capabilities include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Able to work in dusty environments and in all types of weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, wind, rain).
