Plumbing Maintenance Specialist (Itinerant)
To perform semi-skilled and skilled plumbing work and related services to support the ongoing upkeep and functionality of Huntsville City Schools (HCS) buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment. Serves as a journeyman-level member of the Maintenance team responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable plumbing systems districtwide.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Performs skilled plumbing work for district facilities, including maintenance, installation, and repair of plumbing systems and equipment.
- Inspects and repairs plumbing, sewer, irrigation, and other water-related systems to ensure functionality and safety.
- Works independently with minimal supervision and collaborates effectively on team projects as assigned.
- Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures, domestic water and sewer lines, hot water heaters, toilets, urinals, water pumps, water fountains, kitchen, or culinary sinks.
- Operates specialized plumbing tools and equipment, including pro-press machines, sewer snake machines, and TVI cameras for locating plumbing lines.
- Communicates professionally with school staff, administrators, and security personnel regarding maintenance issues and project updates.
- Works after hours and on weekends as needed to respond to service requests and ensure the continuity of operations.
- Utilizes the district's online maintenance work order management system to create, update, and close work orders within established timeframes.
- Reads, analyzes, and interprets blueprints, maps, and specifications to plan and execute plumbing repairs and installations accurately.
- Maintains written and electronic records of work completed, materials used, and equipment serviced.
- Contacts and coordinates with contractors regarding plumbing and related projects as required.
- Repairs and maintains plumbing tools and maintenance equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Recommends the reordering of maintenance supplies and replacement of equipment when necessary.
- Operates heavy equipment as certified and required for assigned tasks.
- Travels to HCS facilities to perform job-related duties and provide district-wide plumbing support.
- Demonstrates expertise in skilled plumbing practices and procedures.
- Holds appropriate licenses and certifications required for plumbing work.
- Reads and interprets technical documents, blueprints, and schematics.
- Exhibits effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Works independently with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Follows all applicable safety and building codes.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
Possesses a combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Requires a minimum of three years of related plumbing experience and a two-year associate degree from an accredited college. Holds a valid Journeyman or Master Plumber License and maintains a valid Alabama drivers license; a CDL or other special licensing may also be required. Demonstrates computer literacy and the ability to operate digital maintenance systems effectively. Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather when necessary.
Physical Requirements :
Requires exerting 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or 25-50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly.
Terms of Employment :
Twelve month year. Salary as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
