Maintenance Assistant

Reporting to a Parks Senior Maintenance Technician, the Maintenance Assistant assists the Parks Maintenance Section of Public Works Operations in the facility and grounds maintenance in right-of-ways, parks, trails, and undeveloped properties owned by the City or by the State. If assigned to the RAC and Ranier Vista, the Maintenance Assistant will take direction and assist Parks, Culture and Recreation and parks maintenance in an approximate 50 / 50 maintenance / recreation role. This position performs semi-skilled, routine, and basic labor, repair, general upkeep, and grounds care work using small tools and non-CDL equipment. Many work assignments are routine and can be performed independently and with limited supervision. Maintenance Assistants are utilized within the Parks Maintenance Section at the Regional Athletic Complex (RAC), on the Rapid Response Team, and on other Parks teams. Specific duties vary depending on job class assignment.

The schedule for this position is a flex 40. The typical schedule is weekdays from 11 : 00AM -7 : 30PM, and weekends from 6 : 00AM 2 : 30PM.

These duties include but are not limited to the following : Operates and repairs / maintains hand / power tools and equipment. Uses work orders, time card system, and written records to accurately document work and activities. Serves as City contact for maintenance problems that arise and attends to issues and calls if additional staff is needed. May be assigned to lead the work of part-time or seasonal employees. Takes initiative to correct routine problems and makes suggestions for improving work methods. Contributes to the planning and organization of the work. May be called upon to assist crews from any Public Works Operations section when needed. Maintains a safe and sanitary work environment, preparing for and being aware of surroundings, and wears appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary. Oversee events, ensuring policies are adhered to by the patrons and calling for appropriate assistance when necessary. Specific functions within Maintenance Assistant Job Class include, but are not limited to :

• Works directly with Parks and Recreation to assist with events, tournaments, leagues, and scheduled games.
• Provide excellent customer service to all visitors to the facilities.
• Set-up and takedown of equipment for all functions taking place in the facilities.
• Supervise events at the facilities, ensuring policies are adhered to by the patrons and calling for appropriate assistance when necessary.
• Serve as the City contact for assistance to parties using the facilities and when conflicts arise between user groups, officials, crew, players, and the public.
• Open, monitor, and close the facilities.

Regional Athletic Complex (RAC) / Rainer Vista Park Maintenance Assistant :

A H.S. Diploma or GED AND any combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required to perform the duties required of the position. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE :

KNOWLEDGE OF : Basic repair, maintenance, cleaning, construction, and / or landscaping techniques common to the Department. Work hazards and demonstrated "safety consciousness" and intent to comply with pertinent safety regulations, standards, and guidelines.

SKILL IN : Record-keeping. Warmly greeting the public and co-workers clearly conveying a sincere willingness to be of service and / or open to resolving the situation at hand. Communication, taking the time to ensure messages are easily understood. Clearly explains self and provides appropriate answers when necessary.

ABILITY TO : Uphold and model the City of Lacey Operations Values of Safety, Teamwork, Service, Professionalism, Trust, Humility, and Accountability. Operate and maintain small manual / power equipment tools necessary for the position. Demonstrate mechanical aptitude. Communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions. Identify problems, make appropriate and quick decisions under emergency conditions, and exercise initiative and judgement in making needed repairs / clean-up and / or requesting assistance. WORK ENVIRONMENT : Working conditions will vary depending upon assignment. Maintenance staff may be assigned to hazardous work areas such as the street surfaces, right-of-ways, medians, parking lots, and around heavy equipment and power tools. Potential exposure to upset, distressed, and volatile members of the public. Assignments are out-of-doors, requiring work in inclement weather and occasionally at dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped work sites. May occasionally be exposed to emergency or disaster worksites. Regularly exposed to unsanitary conditions and hazards like chemicals, hypodermic needles, feces, urine, and garbage. Work in the field performing strenuous labor maintenance tasks in all weather conditions and over rough terrain. Work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the division. Works overtime as assigned.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES : Hearing, speaking, or otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone. Perform strenuous physical labor associated with the essential duties of the position. Work in the field in all weather conditions and over rough terrain. Lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to fifty (50) lbs. Some assistance is available to mitigate the heaviest lifting. Bending, kneeling / crouching, reaching, climbing, and crawling. Operating heavy equipment, as well as electric, gas, and various hand tools. Grasp and hold and effectively use assigned personal protective equipment and tools for the position.
