Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit :

The Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships (CYFCP) builds the capacity of families, service providers, researchers, teachers, and communities to promote the well-being of children and youth. In partnership with colleagues from across the university and the community, the center carries out basic, applied, and action research; translates research into effective programs and practice; infuses community perspectives into university research and teaching; facilitates strategic problem-solving processes; and promotes programs, practices, and policies that yield positive outcomes for children and their families.

Position Summary :

The Youth Empowerment Specialist position will provide leadership and coordination for the development and implementation of a team of young adults with lived experience to provide interim youth voice to interested local system of care collaboratives and work with those collaboratives to identify strategies for increasing local youth participation through targeted awareness and engagement campaigns. The Youth Empowerment Specialist will provide guidance to the young adult leaders, to provide support to local SOC Collaboratives, to provide local youth engagement training, and to provide local youth leadership and advocacy training. The Youth Empowerment Specialist will work with their program team members to develop the trainings and certifications, and the trainings and certifications developed by the program staff for local and State partners will be in line with national certification and training standards (e.g., the National Federation of Families’ National Family Peer Specialist Certification).

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree and two or more years of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • The candidate in this position should have relevant lived experiences related to personal experience with a Serious Emotional Disturbance for at least 12 months.
  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience with skills in the following areas : written and verbal communication skills, organization, and cross- agency collaboration and coordination.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Applicants who are certified or eligible to be certified as a Certified Family Peer SpecialistTM preferred.
  • Candidates who have experience working in a leadership role related to Youth and / or Family Peer Support and / or Education is preferred.
  • Principles and practices of case management; interviewing methods and techniques; substance abuse and mental health assessments and services focusing on the Mental Health population; diagnostic methods and principles; basic structure of the Mental Health criminal justice systems; MS Word and Excel to create communication documents and spreadsheets; and MS PowerPoint to create presentations.
  • Ability to : identify symptoms of mental illness and substance abuse in the JUVENILE population; solve problems analytically; maintain records, files and reports; coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain cooperative working relationships with court staff and individuals outside of the judicial branch; develop and foster a spirit of teamwork to improve the quality of Mental Health Court work teams and committees and to bring people from different agencies together to accomplish the goals of the program.

    Youth Training and Technical Assistance Coordination

    Essential Tasks :

  • Develop and implement a strategic engagement plan with local System of Care Collaboratives (SOC) to apply for and receive support in engaging Youth.
  • In partnership with Community SOC collaboratives, provides workshops addressing the mental health needs of children and youth with serious emotional disturbance (SED).
  • Supports the development of youth leaders, including training.
  • Percentage Of Time : 50%

    Technical assistance

    Essential Tasks :

  • Coordinates and provides training and technical assistance to youth and young adults in NC communities on how to strategically tell your story, how to advocate for others and how to participate in meetings.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to Local System of Care Collaboratives on youth engagement, and youth leadership and advocacy
  • Percentage Of Time : 50%

    Build Community Capacity

    Essential Tasks :

  • Identify and link Young Adult Leaders to partners across the State to address identified needs.
  • Provide support to select Local System of Care Collaboratives to increase community visibility and the impact that youth and family participation can have.
  • Develop leadership and advocacy skills among youth and young adults.
  • Link Young Adult Leaders with entities requesting the involvement of the lived experience voice of mental health consumers.
  • Percentage Of Time : 50%

    Key Responsibility :

    Program Outreach and Information Dissemination

    Essential Tasks :

  • Develop and update content monthly and disseminate information via program website, electronic newsletters, integrating information from ongoing technical assistance and collaboration with key federal, state, and local partners (e.g., SAMHSA, NCDMH / DD / SAS, System of Care Collaborative, etc.)
  • Percentage Of Time : 50%

    Key Responsibility :

    Evaluation activities to inform program goals and implementation

    Essential Tasks :

  • Collaborate with the Evaluation team to develop the content of a Best Practice Guide.
  • Participate with the evaluation team in developing and conducting stakeholder interviews and focus groups.
  • Collaborate with the evaluator to translate quantitative and qualitative data into goals and objectives for the scope of work as grant funded.
