Tax Manager

Location : Portland Metro Area (Hybrid / On-site)

Industry : Real Estate / Property Management / Investment

Type : Full-Time

The Tax Manager will oversee income tax, property tax, and fixed asset functions across multiple entities. This position plays a key role in tax planning, compliance, and strategy, ensuring alignment with company goals while maintaining strong internal controls. The role reports to the head of Tax and partners closely with accounting, finance, and development teams.

Key Responsibilities

Income Taxes (Federal & State)

  • Lead planning and research on complex federal and state income tax issues.
  • Structure and document transactions to support tax efficiency.
  • Oversee compliance, estimated payments, audits, and projections.
  • Manage state and local income tax filings and ensure accurate reporting for business entities and ownership structures.

Fixed Assets

  • Supervise the accounting and tax treatment of fixed assets in accordance with company policy and evolving tax regulations.
  • Review capital expenditure classifications to maximize tax benefits under tangible property regulations.
  • Collaborate with development teams to review new construction projects and properly classify costs for depreciation.
  • Oversee the fixed asset and depreciation systems, ensuring compliance across book, federal, and state reporting.
  • Coordinate cost segregation studies and provide guidance to accounting staff on project closeouts and related training.
  • Property Taxes

  • Partner with internal support staff to manage property tax data, including parcels, payments, assessments, and appeals.
  • Coordinate with external consultants on appeal processes and provide updates to management.
  • Advise on property tax implications for acquisitions, transfers, and reassessments.
  • Prepare or review all required real and personal property tax filings.
  • Forecast tax liabilities for budgeting and financial planning purposes.
  • General

  • Respond to audit inquiries from federal, state, and local taxing authorities.
  • Support process improvements, internal control enhancements, and technology utilization to drive efficiency.
  • Handle additional tax-related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; advanced degree in Taxation or Accounting preferred.
  • License : Active CPA required.
  • Experience :
  • 6+ years of experience in public accounting and / or corporate tax.
  • Strong background in partnership, corporate, and property taxation, ideally within the real estate or construction industries.
  • Proficiency in tax research, compliance, and planning.
  • Familiarity with fixed asset systems and property tax management tools (experience with Yardi or FAS a plus).
  • Skills :
  • Advanced Excel and tax software proficiency.
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
