Hourly Range : $27.74

Overview : The Security Officer 2 is responsible for performing security duties at designated locations, which include monitoring entrances, opening and closing the facility, and conducting outside patrols during evening hours. This role involves ensuring the safety and security of the facility, its possessions, and its occupants. Responsibilities include monitoring alarm systems, fire systems, and access control systems, responding to alarms and emergencies, and maintaining logs and reports. The Security Officer must enforce policies and procedures in accordance with industry standards, communicate effectively with patrons and staff, and provide excellent customer service while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

This position will have a variable five-day schedule. The schedule will be determined by the supervisor (with employee input) and may be modified from time to time to meet the changing needs of the YCBA. In addition, evening and weekend hours are sometimes required.

Required Skills and Abilities :

  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to interact and communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Superior public relations skills, high attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to write clear, concise reports.
  • State of Connecticut License for Security Officer (Guard Card).
  • Flexibility in schedule and day-to-day routine, with the ability to multi-task and excel both independently and as a team member.
  • Proven ability to maintain composure under stress and to exhibit mature, responsible decision-making, problem-solving, and judgment skills.

Preferred Skills and Abilities :

  • Customer service-related experience and proven experience in library or fine arts security, or in security for cultural properties.
  • Experience with Security Control Rooms and electronic security systems; computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and email.
  • CPR First Aid / AED certification, and IFCPP Certified Institutional Protection Specialist (CIPS) is highly preferred.
  • Four or more years of security-related experience.
  • References indicating reliable attendance and punctuality, diligent performance, the ability to work as a team, accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to set and maintain priorities, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Principal Responsibilities :

  • Enforces the University's security rules and protects the property and safety of persons on campus. Remains constantly alert for threats to persons and to the property being protected.
  • Maintains a security watch and safeguards areas by viewing and operating central security surveillance systems. Monitors CRT graphic screens to examine and respond to control alarms, and top detect and report street or property crimes.
  • Acknowledges event, enters response logs and journals into computerized system, and prepares daily and historic reports used for making management decisions regarding area security status.
  • Maintains radio and intercom communications with other Control Rooms to report suspicious activities and maintain visual surveillance of areas.
  • Cooperates with police, fire and other authorities in reporting problems affecting safety and security of persons and property, and in preparing necessary reports.
  • Searches data base access controls, status reports, site design screens, and elevator configurations to determine alarm locations, alarm status, and access eligibility. Updates and revises access codes and settings as necessary.
  • Permits authorized personnel to enter property. Determines admission and records entrance of students, faculty and staff who have forgotten their I.D. cards. Arranges for Security Attendant back up when they leave their post, and monitors time spent away from post.
  • Arranges for investigation if trouble is suspected. Will be required to fill in for Security Attendant I as staffing needs dictate. Issues and controls keys.
  • Performs additional functions incidental to security activities.
  • Required Education and Experience : Four years of related work experience in security, law enforcement, or military police, and a high-school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
