The Department of English and Comparative Literature in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is looking for an applicant who both utilizes digital humanities methods and engages with DH scholarship in their teaching and research.

Significant work with digital projects and their data and infrastructures will demonstrate applied knowledge, practical skills, and experimental approaches. Knowledge of origins, movements, and directions associated with digital humanities will show depth and historical understanding. A record of research and publication will show the ability to translate hands-on work into theoretically informed and peer-recognized scholarship. Facility with interdisciplinary work will be evident through expertise in multiple areas of study and the creative combination of approaches.

Strong evidence of leadership and participation in group endeavors will show a collaborative model for academic work. And public outreach, the sharing of resources, and community building will demonstrate generosity and engagement. Candidates who apply for this position should demonstrate the traits described above and have a significant investment in digital humanities.

They will work regularly with advanced digital methods, have a strong record of collaboration and working across disciplinary areas, and read and produce DH scholarship. They may also have expertise in a complementary area of interest that would find a home in a department of English and comparative literature.

Our department strengths include literary studies; film and media; rhetoric and composition; game studies; Latina / o studies; and health humanities. We also seek to grow in areas of environmental humanities; science, technology, and society; and new media studies. In short, we seek a candidate whose primary interests are in digital humanities; at the same time, we are open to a range of secondary areas of expertise.

Our department is home to several dynamic and close-knit programs that offer numerous opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and digital humanities work. Our Writing Program features an active AI Literacy Lab, and multiple scholars are engaged significantly with artificial intelligence.

The campus Digital Intelligence Lab is also affiliated with our department and supports a campus-wide certificate in digital humanities. The Digital Literacy and Communications Lab serves as hub for innovation in the humanities with a focus on digital humanities, critical games studies, digital literacy, and communications.

The department also maintains the Greenlaw Gameroom, UNC’s only interactive game-based classroom. The department is also deeply involved in the interdisciplinary data science minor and bachelor of arts.

Position Summary :

The Department of English & Comparative Literature at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. We are committed to hiring an exceptional teacher / scholar who brings energy and a fresh perspective to their research, pedagogy, and service.

The successful candidate will teach 2-2 courseload made up of graduate and undergraduate courses; contribute to both undergraduate and graduate curricula; mentor students; participate in select administrative activities; develop significant digital projects; and engage in ongoing scholarly research.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. English or a related degree and instructional experience at the college level by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

Preferred qualifications include demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching, a strong research portfolio, expertise in research methods, a history of collaboration, technical abilities that support digital humanities work, and evidence of administrative and service experience.
