PRIMARY PURPOSE / GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

The Technical Manager is responsible for supervising technicians and the production coordinator to advance programs and events. Proficient with technical sound, lighting A / V, and recording / editing functions of Scripps College's Performing Arts Center (PAC), Balch Auditorium and various campus facilities for both academic and public events. The technical manager works with IT, Media Services, Public Events and Facilities staff to coordinate event set-up, facilities improvements, and repairs. The technical manager works closely with several departments outside of Public Events, including Music, Dance, Humanities Institute, CORE Program, IT, and Facilities, and coordinates the technical requirements for external groups renting PAC facilities as well as various campus facilities.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

• Technical Sound and Lighting Direction : Maintains sound systems, lighting systems, acoustic systems, rigging and all other technical equipment in the PAC and Balch Auditorium. Works with academic departments and public events staff to design, prepare and operate lighting and sound equipment during events. Coordinates with A / V staff to set up audio-visual equipment in these venues. Trains and supervises production and technical assistants (students) for in-house productions.
• Academic Technical Support : Works with academic departments (Music, Joint Music Program, Dance, Humanities Institute, CORE) to set up PAC and Balch Auditorium stages for classes, rehearsals and performances. Records student recitals and other events in PAC and edits recordings for CD and / or Internet, and coordinates any outside vendors contracted for this task. Coordinates with A / V and IT to provide technical support for PAC classrooms, offices, and the Music Library. Participates as a member of the PAC Committee to advise decision-makers on technical issues related to the scheduling and use of the PAC and Balch Auditorium.
• Campus Event Support : Works collaboratively with the Office of Public Events and campus departments to provide technical support as needed for external or annual campus events with PAC and various campus locations.
• Facilities Coordination : Maintains equipment inventory and recommends to the Director of Events and Conference Services any necessary technical improvements, work orders and equipment acquisition. Assesses facility repair and upkeep needs, and coordinates with Facilities Department to implement necessary work. Enforces fire and safety regulations for auditorium / theater. Plans and sets staging for events in coordination with Production Manager and Facilities staff.
• PAC Client Services : Gathers information about incoming events as necessary and provides the Production Manager with an evaluation of technical requirements of contracts as part of the negotiation process. Supervises and monitors use of stage and auditorium by external clients. Provides on-site technical direction and / or delegates responsibility during events for clients as needed.
• Performs additional related duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or any other combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

Minimum of 5 years' experience in audio-visual and technical production assignments.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

This is a regular status, full-time, 12-month, benefits eligible, non-exempt level position.

Specific hours will vary due to the needs of the College or the department. Evening and weekend availability is required.

Hourly rate range : $30.00-$36.00. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, andtraining.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY :

Supervises Production Coordinator, technicians, and students from the departments of Public Events and Media Services.
