Corrections Officer

Base Pay : $19.87 Hourly

Correction Officer I- $44,430.79 License with less than 2 years of service time + Retention Pay $4,313.66 Total Salary $48,744.45

Correction Officer II- $46,209.92 License with less than 4 years of service time + Retention Pay $4,486.30 more than 2 years of service Total Salary $50,696.22

Correction Officer III-$48,605.81 License with more than 4 years of service + Retention Pay $4,719.00 Total Salary $53,324.81

Biweekly Pay

Intermediate Jailer Proficiency - $34.62

Advanced Jailer Proficiency - $46.15

Master Jailer Proficiency - $57.69

Required Test : All applicants will be required to take The Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam (LECSE) implemented August 2017. The LE Exam is conducted every Wednesday and Friday, at 8 : 30am or upon request. Contact Nueces County Sheriff Office, Recruiter Jeremy Tamez at (361) 887-2235 for scheduling details.

Required : Attach your High School Diploma / GED and Driver's License / State Identification Card before submitting your application. Must have a current Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Jailers License (TCOLE).

Summary : The primary purpose of the Corrections Officer position is to guard, observe and transport inmates. Officer enforces the rules and policies of the facility and ensures that the safety and welfare of inmates and staff are safeguarded. This position requires completion of field training including closely supervised performance of corrections officer duties. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

May, under close supervision, perform Corrections Officer duties, including : Booking, classifying, observing, transferring, transporting and releasing inmates with attention to the health, safety and security of other officers, inmates and the public. Conducts inspections, shakedowns, inmate searches and makes key checks. Conducts head counts of inmates. Completes, checks and processes official papers and documents. Intervenes and resolves crisis situations such as fights, fires and medical emergencies. Restrains combative inmates. Serves or supervises the serving of meals to inmates. Supervises inmates while they are performing their cleaning duties. Provides informal counseling to inmates. Conducts safety inspections and inspections of fire exits. Assists with the personal needs of inmates, such as telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits and commissary.

Supervisory Responsibilities : Does not supervise any employees directly. However, is involved in the direct supervision of all activities of inmates in the housing. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier.

Education and / or Experience : High school diploma or general education degree (GED); eighteen years of age and a citizen of the United States. All successful candidates must consent to a criminal background check and are required to maintain their TCOLE certification as a Corrections Officer.

Language Skills : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills : Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability : Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Active Jailer License (TCOLE)

Other Skills and Abilities : Ability to maintain control in highly stressful situations. Ability to communicate with individuals from all socio-economic groups. Ability to learn laws, departmental policies, rules, regulations, instructions and correctional literature regarding the custody of persons. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to write clear and concise reports and to maintain complete records as required. Ability to meet established physical standards. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and officials, inmates and the public.

The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may be required to lift inmates who are prone and separate inmates who are fighting. Employee uses vision to observe inmates, watch monitors, conduct searches and complete paperwork.

Work Environment : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration. Employee regularly works with mechanical gates that could expose him / her to the risk of electrical shock. Employee is exposed to dust in the air and occasional vibration when inmates begin banging on jail bars. The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderate to loud. It is dependent on the activities and demeanor of the inmates. Employee may be exposed to body fluids, body odors, body lice, infectious diseases and respiratory hazards.
