K-9 Group Class / Training Assistant to help with classes evenings and on Saturday mornings. Assisting with individual clients & canine needs and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment. Responsibilities often include answering questions, demonstrating exercises, and motivating participants.
Skills :
K-9 handling and communication skills are critical for interacting with participants in K-9 training classes, where the assistant helps both K-9s and their human handlers. Strong abilities in both areas ensure a safe, effective, and positive learning environment for everyone involved.
Key skills include :
- Reading canine body language : A Training Assistant must recognize subtle signals of stress, fear, or over-excitement in a K9 to prevent conflicts and ensure a safe, focused training session.
- Leash handling : Confident and precise leash work is essential for guiding K-9s and managing behavior, especially in a distracting group setting.
- Precision training : This involves the exactness of commands and the timing of rewards. Being precise helps the K-9 understand precisely what is being asked of them.
- Adaptability : Being able to adjust training strategy on the spot is necessary to account for the unique temperament and learning style of each K-9 and handler.
Key communication skills include :
Setting clear expectations : What the Instructor is teaching, and how to behave in the group setting.Active listening and empathy : Training Assistant must listen to a client's concerns, understand their goals, and empathize with their frustrations.Concise feedback : Delivering short, direct, and understandable information is crucial for owners, who may feel overwhelmed.Creating a supportive environment : Training Assistant must be able to manage the group, redirect disruptive participants, and give one-on-one attention to those who need it.
