Job Title: Design Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Field Service team. You will be responsible for the design and delivery of custom field service equipment that enables safe and efficient servicing of the iron-air battery product in the field. Your work will include electro-mechanical system design, prototyping, and integration of large field service tools for harsh outdoor environments.
Responsibilities
- Design material handling equipment for lifting, moving, and servicing modules and components in the field.
- Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with teams to build integrated units.
- Work with vendors and field service engineers to transition designs from prototype to a weatherized field service tool.
- Perform testing, hand calculations, and FEA to inform specifications and future design direction.
- Release designs consistent with company and team best practices, including drawings and tolerance analysis.
- Document system designs, usage guidelines, and validation procedures.
- Support troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement of field service tools.
- Travel up to 20% to other offices or vendor sites.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering or related field.
- 7+ years industry experience in mechanical design.
- Experience in leading design work for complex mechanical systems and structural design.
- Experience with FEA for structural analysis.
- Experience in electro-mechanical system integration, including motors, actuators, and drive systems.
- Proficiency in CAD software, particularly SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD.
- Proficiency in ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or SimScale.
- Proficiency in prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to balance speed, rigor, and safety.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Advanced understanding of mechanical power transmission, motion control, gear ratios, and torque calculation.
- Knowledge in HumanCAD or Siemens Jack is a plus.
- Sense of urgency and self-driven to meet schedule targets.
Work Environment
You will work alongside 2 Field Service Engineers on a team, and you will not be leading the project solo. The role involves occasional travel to other offices or vendor sites, up to 20% of the time.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Berkeley, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $80.00 - $90.00/hr.
