Reporting Intern, News Spring 2026

POSITION PURPOSE

The news reporting intern will learn to create, edit, and distribute compelling news content for a variety of digital and broadcast platforms. This position will gain experience in audio, digital and video journalism production, professional editing techniques, and writing. As a valued member of our team, the news reporting intern will have learning and growth opportunities from each of our content areas, collaborating across departments like radio, television, video, community engagement, and more.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in reporting news content creation and distribution.
• This could include making calls on news stories, attending press events, community gatherings and other newsworthy events in Central Indiana for coverage.
• Assist in researching and gathering information for news projects, developing skills in sourcing credible content.
• This could include shadowing interviews with experts and writing stories for broadcast and web platforms.
• Help manage and maintain WFYI's news content.
• This could include uploading and organizing digital files, creating and updating metadata, and backing up digital content.
• Support the development of news and digital content ideas while learning how to identify compelling stories.
• This could include brainstorming sessions to explore new topics, formats, and storytelling approaches across platforms.
• Gain an understanding of how WFYI values, contributes to, and sustains its commitment to representing the rich diversity of our community, and actively supports efforts that amplify stories that reflect the voices and perspectives within it.
