Salary and Employment Details

  • Hiring Salary : Cadets $4,431.75 per month; Police Officer I $4,698 per month. This position is a pay grade 10.

Educational and Experience Requirements

  • Cadet / Police Officer I : High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Sixty semester hours of college credit preferred.
  • Completed basic police training as required by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), or currently completing TCOLE certification.
  • Must successfully pass FEMA 100, 200b, 700a, and 800b.
  • Must stay up-to-date with continuing education, training, or recertification processes necessary to keep license / certification valid.

    • Nature and Purpose of the Position

    Performs regular patrols to prevent crime, suppress disturbances, arrest offenders, and give aid and information to all citizens as circumstances require for Sam Houston State University. Enforces all University, State and local laws.

    Main Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas of the campus (on foot, automobile, or motor scooter).
  • Advises, directs, and provides information to the general public.
  • Responds to and handles emergency calls; enforces state laws and applicable ordinances.
  • Makes arrests with and without warrants; investigates complaints from students, faculty, and staff; conducts preliminary investigations of crimes.
  • Compiles necessary reports and records; safeguards property; collects, preserves, and maintains chain of custody of evidence; testifies in courts.
  • Performs periodic inspections and reviews work quality and new techniques; performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Thorough knowledge and use of firearms, radar, criminal investigation equipment, photographic equipment, radio equipment, alarm systems, defensive devices, and emergency motor vehicles.
  • Proficiency in all phases of work performed; exposure to outside weather conditions; may require night work; positions may be hazard-prone.
  • Must have a pleasant, courteous disposition and commit to accurate and cheerful service.
  • This position may be assigned to work at any SHSU campus based on current needs; may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
