Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin Engineering (hereafter "BE") is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, BE has become a unique 21st-century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by ongoing research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. BE has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of BE educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society. Its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. BE is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Space Analyst organizes, details, and ensures the completion of space planning duties critical to the academic mission of the Baskin School of Engineering. The incumbent provides senior-level expertise to advise, advance, and support space planning and capital project initiatives integral to the success of the division and campus. As a seasoned, experienced planning professional, the Senior Space Analyst collaborates with colleagues across the campus and utilizes industry practices to find efficient solutions in a transparent, collegial, and professional manner. The Senior Space Analyst operates with considerable independence in concept planning, project definition, and feasibility phases of development.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary : $106,400 - $124,800 / year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    50% - Senior Space Planning

  • Delivers planning services to support critical academic and administrative objectives of the Baskin School of Engineering, with a primary focus on securing, optimizing, and enhancing the use of assigned space for BE's instructional, student support, laboratory, office, and administrative needs.
  • Provides staff with planning and leadership in advancing BE space planning efforts, including the collection, analysis, and evaluation of planning data and the preparation and presentation of supporting statistical and graphic materials.
  • Ensures professionalism and accuracy of space planning documents, and provides model deliverables for both the campus and the greater UC system.
  • Creates Space Plan utilizing quality technical writing, tabular analysis, and graphic exhibits in a professional-quality report publication.
  • 25% - Client Management

  • In coordination with the Director, maintains regular office hours and meets with faculty, staff, students, and administration to discuss concerns, requests, or opportunities to improve BE space performance.
  • Researches and implements tracking systems for all space moves, facility upgrades, and capital improvements that are managed / overseen by the Space Planning Team.
  • Coordinates with the Director to conduct bi-weekly, or more frequent, team reviews focused on deadlines, deliverables, and client concerns presented to the team.
  • 15% - Space Liaison

  • Coordinates with multiple units (Capital Planning and Space Management; Physical Planning, Development and Operations; Campus Provost / Executive Vice Chancellor; Genomics Institute; etc.) as organized by the Director, to provide continued momentum on necessary space initiatives on behalf of BE.
  • Collaborates with BE staff, partnering division leaders, campus administrators, and external agencies / contractors to communicate analysis findings and advocate for enhanced space performance across both the Division and the campus.
  • Partners with department and campus leadership on space planning development. Evaluates and advises on design and allocation.
  • Acts as the secondary point of contact, following the Director, for all outreach, communications, and the handling of space-sensitive information.
  • 10% - Space Analysis

  • Supports the Space Planning Team with a wide range of information-driven tasks, including reconnaissance, review, data clean-up, analysis, and reporting.
  • Prioritizes critical analysis tasks, assessing their importance and estimating the time required to deliver results for key projects essential to successful BE space performance.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough working knowledge in operational planning, design production, city planning, architecture, or other planning-related fields.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with an intention for client success.
  • Political acumen to manage a variety of demands among groups with conflicting goals.
  • Strong, demonstrable organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage ongoing and proposed development plans.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in environmental design, architecture, engineering, urban planning, business, environmental / regulatory compliance, science, or writing.
  • Graduate degree in related area, including but not limited to architecture, engineering, urban planning, business, environmental / regulatory compliance, science, or writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of the organization, including its architectural history, short and long-range development plans, and the process for attaining development approvals.
  • Strong design and document production skills using common software used by the space planning team : AutoCAD, SketchUP, ArcGIS, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Suite, and Google Suite.
  • USGBC LEED Accredited Professional Certification.
  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work a hybrid work schedule and must be able to work successfully from a home / remote office and fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
  • Must work in Jack Baskin Engineering Building at least three days of the week, preferably on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
