Sanctions and Regulatory Compliance Lead

Locations : San Francisco, CA | New York City, NY | Washington, DC

About Anthropic

Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the Role

As our Sanctions and Regulatory Compliance Lead, you will have day-to-day responsibility for the development and management of our Sanctions and Regulatory Compliance program within our Integrity and Compliance organization. Our Integrity and Compliance program at Anthropic is bespoke, reflecting our unique mission and position as one of the leading AI labs operating on the frontier. Our Sanctions and Regulatory Compliance pillar comprises a key pillar of our overall Integrity and Compliance function and covers a range of compliance domain areas including trade sanctions and other regulatory compliance programs stemming from global AI Safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Lead Anthropic's Sanctions and Regulatory Compliance program, including managing associated risks

Build and maintain effective compliance programs including for areas such as trade sanctions and artificial intelligence

Manage reporting of compliance risk to leadership, and effectively communicate compliance related topics to cross-functional stakeholders

Work closely with our legal and regulatory operations partners to ensure Anthropic develops strong and effective compliance programs

Assist in managing regulatory outreach and communications as needed in partnership with Legal and Operations teams

Assist in managing customer and third-party outreach and communications as needed in partnership with Legal and Operations teams

Set compliance-related policies, communication and training strategies to ensure employees understand the program

Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Anthropic's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law

You may be a good fit if you have

At least 10 years of experience leading sanctions and compliance functions, particularly with an evolving global regulatory environment

Proven ability to design, implement and manage comprehensive compliance programs across trade sanctions, export control and other regulatory areas

Experience building high-performing teams that adapt to evolving regulatory landscapes.

A leadership style characterized by integrity, sound judgment, strategic thinking and solution-orientation

Exceptional communication skills that drive stakeholder buy-in, create lasting change and establish accountability

Strong candidates may have

Prior experience in a Big 4 or other compliance consulting or advisory professional services firm

Experience in a hyper-scaling tech company or other fast-paced environment

Role-specific policy

We expect staff to be able to work from any of our San Francisco, New York or Washington, DC offices at least 3 days a week, though we encourage you to apply even if you might need some flexibility for an interim period of time.

Compensation

Base compensation : $270,000 – $345,000 USD. Total package includes equity, benefits, and may include incentive compensation.

Logistics

Education requirements

We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Location-based hybrid policy :

Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

Visa sponsorship

We sponsor visas. However, we're not able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa.

EEO Statement

As set forth in Anthropic's Equal Employment Opportunity policy, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected group status under any applicable law.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

Benefits

Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
