Senior Accountant

The Department of Financial Services is seeking candidates for the position of Senior Accountant in the Office of Financial Management. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Enters daily cash receipts and maintains familiarity with various regulations and sections of Insurance Law / Financial Services Law and the fees / taxes associated with each;
- Reconciles cash receipts and maintains a working knowledge of reports. Detects errors and takes necessary steps to correct them. Maintains a working knowledge of basic accounting principles and applies basic accounting skills in completing this task;
- Audits original and amended Motor Vehicle Law Enforcement filings submitted by insurance companies. Corresponds with insurance companies and other entities as necessary. Summarizes findings and recommendations in written report to supervisor;
- Records, tracks, and processes refunds for eChecks;
- Processes late bills for security fund filings and retaliatory tax filings;
- Responds to insurance companies' inquiries by telephone and e-mail regarding bills, revenue, and accounts receivable;
- Maintains company and excess line broker databases and tables in an accurate and timely manner;
- Performs general office duties, including but not limited to, answering telephones, assisting callers, making photocopies, preparing documents for filing, and mailing of bills; and
- Performs other duties, as required.
Minimum Qualifications :
Trainee 1 : A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation or a bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses.Trainee 2 : A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation or a bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and one year of professional experience in accounting / auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and / or review, analysis and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles.Journey Level : A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation or a bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and two years of professional experience as described above. Substitution : A master's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation may substitute for one year of the professional experience. A currently valid Certified Public Accountant license and registration issued by New York State may substitute for two years of the professional experience.NY HELPS : This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply (see minimum qualifications above). At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making permanent non-competitive appointments. At a future date (within one year of appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
