Overview
Academic Advisor at Broward College — under general direction, the purpose of the job is to support students holistically following first term enrollment through graduation. The advisor assists students in defining and clarifying their educational and career goals. Employees utilize a case management approach to assess academic levels, guide career exploration, and facilitate the development of academic plans. They analyze transcript evaluations for entry and exit from the college, assess student needs and make appropriate referrals for student support services, maintain records, and perform related work as directed.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic and career advising to students using a case management approach with in-depth intake interviews, goal development (short- and long-term), follow-up, and outreach for students needing support.
- Collaborate with administrators, faculty, and staff in assigned pathways to support student success; resolve advising issues related to curriculum and prerequisites.
- Review transcripts to determine eligibility for admission to a college or program, including unofficial transfer credit evaluation.
- Monitor academic progress within assigned caseload and communicate with students to meet deadlines for coursework, graduation, and program requirements.
- Assist with training or guidance for new advisors on college policy and regulations affecting program requirements.
- Facilitate career and group advising sessions for students in the caseload.
- Identify strategies to enhance the student experience and retention; collaborate with college departments to resolve registration barriers.
- Facilitate career exploration using various assessment tools and develop academic plans aligned with educational and career goals using applicable technology.
- Serve on college committees or task forces as appropriate; may advise student organizations and liaise with campus departments.
- Respond to email and telephone inquiries related to advising, registration, graduation, transfer information, and college policies.
- Process electronic forms and review student academic history to determine eligibility for transient coursework per policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
Master's degree required. Preferably in Counseling, Social Work or Education.Minimum Experience / Training
Four years of relevant experience.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
In-depth functional knowledge in the area of specialization and general knowledge of related areas in the College.Ability to perform complex administrative analysis with general supervision.Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Excellent coordination and communication skills used to influence decision-making at all levels.Ability to plan and manage own work flow, priorities, and results.Ability to present and disseminate data to various levels.Advanced knowledge of computerized systems and software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and specialized college systems.Ability to interact effectively with employees and student populations.Culture and Benefits
