Job Summary
The Laboratory Quality Technician supports product and material quality through detailed testing, inspection, and audit activities. This role is responsible for incoming material inspection, paint lab testing, LPAs, and participating in structured problem-solving activities. The technician also assists with in-process inspections as needed and is responsible for final dimensional inspections to ensure compliance with engineering specifications. This position directly supports the Quality Management System (QMS) and IATF 16949 requirements.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
- Conduct incoming inspection of raw materials, chemicals, fasteners, and externally sourced components.
- Perform paint lab evaluations, including :
- Coating adhesion
- Color matching
- Gloss and film build
- Viscosity and cure
- Conduct lab-based material and product tests to verify compliance with specifications.
- Perform final dimensional inspections using standard gauges and CMM tools.
- Support in-process inspections when required by production demands or quality escalations.
- Execute scheduled LPAs, document findings, and escalate discrepancies.
- Support corrective actions and verify resolution of audit findings.
- Participate in cross-functional root cause investigations (5-Why, Ishikawa, etc.).
- Provide accurate test results and technical data to support corrective / preventive actions.
- Maintain calibration of lab and measurement equipment per QMS requirements.
- Ensure lab cleanliness, environmental safety, and adherence to handling standards.
- Document test results, audit findings, and NCRs in ERP and QMS systems.
- Communicate test results and nonconformities to production and engineering teams.
- Authority to quarantine incoming materials or finished goods not meeting specs.
- Authority to stop production for quality issues impacting customer requirements.
- Authority to initiate NCRs and assign test results to support investigations.

Ability to work a flexible schedule depending on production demands. Overtime required at timesFunctions well in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful team environmentAbility to manage time to meet production deadlines and schedulesBroad understanding of safety systems and enforcement of safety rules and policiesDemonstrates excellent team building and conflict management skillsA fundamental understanding of basic manufacturing operations and an eye for detailAt least 2 years in a quality position, preferrable automotive qualityProficiency with measuring instruments and inspection methodsAbility to read engineering drawings and understand tolerances.High School Diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certification preferred.1–3 years of experience in a lab, coatings, or quality testing role.Familiarity with paint testing tools, dimensional metrology, and basic SPC.Ability to interpret blueprints, control plans, and test specifications.Strong organizational and communication skills.Physical Requirements
