The Equipment Technician II performs a variety of technical, mechanical and general repair or maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. This is the second level of a three level series. It is differentiated from the first level in that tasks are of a higher level of technical difficulty involving diagnostic skills and major component rebuilding.The Equipment Technician II performs works on high value equipment where proper preventive maintenance is necessary in order to preserve assets and avoid injuries attributable to equipment failure. Work direction and training will be provided to less experienced technicians.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Transports and Test drives equipment while performing vehicle safety inspections to ensure proper function;
Tasks include painting (application of single stage and base coat / clear coat systems), surface preparation, fiberglass repair, rust proofing and repair, window replacement, door and hood adjustment, frame and structural straightening, repair of unitized bodies and other duties of a similar level;
Frequently communicates with others in the work unit to provide information relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work related needs; occasionally interacts with others in the work unit to exchange detailed and / or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised;
Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
The job requires an associate's degree in an appropriate mechanical specialty, such as automotive and diesel technology, and three or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. A valid commercial driver's license (CDL Class B) with an air brake endorsement is required. Appropriate DOT certification and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification are required and / or other appropriate certification. Incumbent will also be required to furnish a complete set of hand tools needed to complete the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include :
Most work is performed in a shop environment, but will include outdoor work. Work varies from moderate to very heavy and requires lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing. There is regular exposure to multiple very disagreeable working conditions such as extreme weather conditions, dust, dirt, mud, fumes, and loud noise. There is regular exposure to hazardous chemicals and fuel, fumes, electrical hazards, moving equipment, vehicles, and slippery conditions.
Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, digital dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing / listening, seeing / observing, repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work : Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
