Job description

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, the Engineering Technician has a variety of duties and responsibilities in the field of

Civil engineering design

Public works permitting, inspection, and administration

Engineering technical assistance

Computer aided design (CAD)

Geographic information systems (GIS)

The Engineering Technician will also assist with clerical work, and perform other related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Staffing the public counter to issue public works permits and assist the general public with inquiries and public works services

Work with the public in receiving complaints and inquiries, by email, on the telephone, and / or at the counter and attempt to resolve problems and provide information independently except in extraordinary circumstances.

Independently compose correspondence and memorandums in response to complaints, informational matters, inquiries, etc.

Preparation, and reviewof plans, specifications, and cost estimates, diagrams, maps, exhibits, graphs and charts using computer aided design (CAD) or other computer applications

Conducting or participating research, studies, and field surveys, including the collection and compilation of a wide variety of data

Inputting data and generating reports related to pavement management systems;

Making mathematical computations

Accessing, inputting, and modifying data on the City's geographic and property information network (GIS)

Research of public records

Reviewing and preparing a variety of routine reports and correspondence;

Conducting field inspections

Implementing processes for the storage of project documentation

Providing general administrative support

Performing other functions as assigned

Assists the Administrative Assistant in support of office operations as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

Knowledge

Principles and practices of civil engineering, field surveying, design drafting, and basic construction inspection;

Skills

Operating Microsoft Office software applications is required (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook)

Desirable :  Accela, CAD, GIS, Adobe, and Bluebeamsoftware

Communicating effectively both orally and in writing

Maintaining accurate and organized filing systems and records

Ability to

Understand and follow written and verbal instructions;

Provide excellent professional customer service;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;

Perform duties of the position in both an office environment and in the field, which may involve sitting, standing, driving, and walking for prolonged or intermittent periods of time.

Education and Experience :

A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college-level coursework in engineering, mathematics or a related field.

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program is desirable.

Prior civil engineering, municipal government, and / or public works construction experience is desirable.

Licenses / Certificates :  Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.
