Overview

Locations : New York, NY; Boston, MA; or Buffalo, NY.

The Leveraged Lending Commercial Credit Regional Segment Director is responsible for overseeing credit risk management, underwriting strategies, and portfolio management for the Leveraged Lending portfolio serving Middle Market and PE Sponsored clients. This leadership role includes developing credit policies, procedures, and guidelines; managing a team of credit professionals; and ensuring the quality and performance of the loan portfolio align with the bank's risk appetite and regulatory requirements.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead a team that partners with the sales and monitoring teams and manages the entire credit process from deal screening through approval, including structuring the transaction and negotiating legal documentation. Provide independent credit quality assessments for the Bank’s largest commercial clients, identifying credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, financial trends, and other pertinent credit issues. Assessments include initial analyses of new money transactions, renewals, and material modifications.

Oversee the quality, efficiency, and timeliness of underwriting for multiple underwriting teams, including deal structuring, negotiating and approving terms sheets / legal documents, and loan approvals according to credit policy and Bank procedures.

Provide guidance and leadership on complex credit relationships and foster collaboration among Commercial Credit, credit risk management, monitoring, closing, and relationship management teams.

Meet with bank clients and prospects as appropriate.

Foster a collaborative team culture and provide direction on training and employee development initiatives.

Proactively deploy and utilize Commercial Credit resources across teams; prioritize and monitor workflow.

Adhere to and advise teams on credit policy.

Lead a team that conducts ongoing risk assessment of customers, evaluating compliance with loan agreements and identifying emerging risks or changes in financial position.

Oversee and manage the continuous commercial credit monitoring (CCM) activities of multiple monitoring teams to identify emerging credit risk and take appropriate actions. CCM activities include annual reviews, interim memos, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other credit surveillance.

Ensure quality, timeliness, and efficiency of monitoring activities for multiple teams.

Foster a collaborative team culture and provide direction on training and employee development initiatives.

Exercise managerial authority over staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, and terminations.

Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in line with the Risk Appetite. Design, implement, maintain, and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk; escalate issues to management as needed.

Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and responses to regulator findings as applicable.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities

Corporate / Institutional designation includes FIG, Fund Banking, Institutional / REIT, Large Corporate, and Leveraged Lending. Commercial Credit is responsible for the credit delivery of the Bank’s commercial clients, from initial analyses to restructurings and ongoing monitoring. It ensures accurate risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads to inform credit decisions for new, renewed, or amended transactions. Commercial Credit supports Regional Credit Officers and Loan Committees in timely, informative credit decisions within lending parameters. Interaction occurs with senior management in both First and Second lines of defense. Recruits, develops, and maintains a balanced team with bench strength.

Supervisory / Managerial Responsibilities

Position will have a small team of manager-level direct reports and up to 40 indirect reports.

Education and Experience Required

Bachelors’ degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline with 12 years’ related experience and 4 years’ leadership / supervisory experience; or, in lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 16 years’ higher education and work experience to include 12 years’ related experience with 4 years’ leadership / supervisory experience.

Strong analytical and decision-making abilities.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Customer-focused with strong interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in financial modeling and risk assessment tools.

Experience with complex credit structures and syndicated loans.

Ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Familiarity with credit risk rating models and loan / portfolio management systems.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Education and Experience Preferred

MBA / Advanced Degree or CPA.

Experience with Capital IQ, FactSet, and Bloomberg.
