UEM Occupational Safety Manager
Oversees policy and procedure implementation to ensure a safe, compliant work environment at Utilities and Energy Management (UEM). Partners with managers to monitor safety compliance, identify issues, and provide guidance on maintaining regulatory standards.
Creates, manages, maintains, and improves occupational safety programs for Utilities and Energy Management. Coordinates with EHS on UEM needs to include incident response. Represents UEM in all campus-wide safety program efforts and updates UEM leadership with changes to existing programs or new initiatives from EHS.
Conducts periodic safety and health walk-through inspections and assesses hazardous conditions for UEM spaces, reviews departmental incident reports, and performs incident investigations for causal factors. Performs periodic audits of the various programs, including but not limited to lockout / tagout, confined space entry, walking / working surfaces, and fall protection. Assist with cause analysis for operational events as assigned.
Collect and manage a variety of incident related data, run metrics on trends, and distribute relevant information to UEM leadership. Develop tools / programs to leverage historical data to change trajectory of UEM safety and influence safety culture.
Maintain the workplace safety team and serve as Technical Management advisor to safety committees. Coordinate and attend safety and training meetings for all department sections. Serve as liaison and coordinate with appropriate personnel on safety issues involving other departments.
Provide leadership, initiative, direction, guidance and long term planning on occupational safety and health by evaluating practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk. Implement best practices and ensure effective allocation and use of related resources. Develops and implements innovative departmental metrics and goals that drive improvements in safety.
Coordinate and conduct occupational safety and health training and new employee and contractor safety orientation training.
Bachelors Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field, 8+ years of experience in the field of occupational safety and health, experience in an industrial setting. Familiar w / OSHA programs, NESC and NEC rules. Ability to implement work processes to eliminate / reduce hazards and develop programs, training plans and workshops that promote occupational safety. Understanding of hazardous materials management and experience in accident investigations, root cause investigations, job hazard safety analysis, behavior-based programs, pre-task analysis, and the knowledge and skill to make determinations from investigative reports of workplace accidents. Experience in reporting and developing policies. Ability to communicate effectively and understands change management processes. Promotes a safe work environment, with ability to identify safety or environmental concerns and assist staff with correcting hazardous conditions. Ability to work individually as well as part of a team, establish and maintain effective working relationships with various groups, vendors, and coworkers.
Related master of science degree from an accredited University, Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and 5+ years of safety experience in a utility / plant operations, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational safety programs, or a related field. Experience working in higher education environment. Indepth knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI guidelines and practices. CPR / AED certified. Trained and experienced in ThinkReliabilty Cause Mapping. Strong communication, planning, advisory, and process management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously and multiple deadlines. Ability to recognize health and safety needs of a utility service and energy provider and deliver based on these needs. Strong analytical skills in developing successful solutions to complex issues. Experience in implementing OSHA training programs. Experience in Asbestos and Lead Paint Abatement policies and work methods.

40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, work hours to be discussed with supervisor, after hours may be necessary in the event of an emergency.
