Lead Mold Maker – Plastic Injection Molding
About the Role
A growing custom injection molding company in the Ann Arbor area is seeking a Tool Shop Lead Mold Maker to oversee daily toolroom operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for managing toolmakers, coordinating mold builds and repairs, and ensuring tooling performance supports production and quality goals.
Key Responsibilities
Lead day-to-day toolroom activities including mold maintenance, repair, and new mold builds.
Supervise and mentor a team of toolmakers and machinists.
Prioritize work orders and coordinate with production to minimize downtime.
Troubleshoot tooling and mold performance issues.
Read and interpret mold designs, blueprints, and CAD drawings.
Manage outsourcing and vendor relationships for specialized tooling projects.
Maintain toolroom equipment and preventive maintenance programs.
Drive continuous improvement in mold performance, tooling life, and process efficiency.
Qualifications
10+ years of plastic injection mold making experience required.
Prior leadership or lead role in a mold or tool shop environment.
Proficient with CNC machining, EDM, and mold assembly.
Strong understanding of mold design, hot runner systems, and precision tooling.
Ability to diagnose tooling issues and implement effective repairs.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
