Job Details : Purpose
The Epic Database Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of SQL database environments supporting Epic's reporting and data warehouse systems, such as Clarity and Caboodle, which are integral components of the broader Epic electronic health record (EHR) ecosystem. Reporting to the Manager of Enterprise Decision Support, this role ensures the integrity, security, and availability of data across development, test, and production environments. The Epic Database Administrator collaborates closely with Epic analysts, infrastructure teams, and clinical informatics staff to support data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Administers and Maintains Epic Reporting and Data Warehouse Databases
Installs, configures, and maintains SQL databases supporting Epic modules, such as Clarity (reporting) and Caboodle (data warehousing).
Ensures successful execution of nightly ETL processes from database systems, (e.g., Epic Chronicles) to Epic reporting and warehouse systems, including Clarity and Caboodle.
Applies upgrades, patches, and performance tuning to maintain optimal performance.
Troubleshoots and resolves database-related issues across development, test, and production environments.
Ensures Data Security, Integrity, and Compliance
Defines and enforces database security policies and access controls.
Implements encryption, backup, and recovery protocols to safeguard sensitive data.
Monitors for unauthorized access and potential vulnerabilities.
Ensures compliance with organizational policies and IT configuration guidelines.
Supports Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity, and Performance Optimization
Develops and tests disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
Ensures high availability and resilience of database services.
Monitors performance metrics and usage trends, resolving bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
Automates recurring workflows to improve operational efficiency.
Collaborates with Cross-Functional Teams and Participates in Projects
Works closely with Epic analysts, clinical informatics, and infrastructure teams.
Serves as a technical resource on Epic-related projects and initiatives.
Applies project management principles to support deliverables and timelines.
Communicates technical issues and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Designs and Implements Scalable Database Solutions
Creates database architectures aligned with academic and business objectives.
Adds new tables and columns to ETL extracts as needed.
Supports integration with other reporting and analytics platforms.
Prepares and Maintains Comprehensive Documentation
Develops and updates documentation for disaster recovery plans, licenses, warranties, and contracts.
Maintains inventories, life cycle plans, project plans, and customer road maps.
Documents technical specifications and contributes to planning efforts.
Marginal or Periodic Functions :
Participates in Epic upgrade cycles, system migrations, and platform transitions.
Conducts peer reviews of database configurations and ETL processes.
Provides mentorship or training to junior staff or interns.
Engages in professional development and certification renewal.
Supports audits and compliance reviews as needed.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. 3 years of experience as a Database Administrator or in database design, implementation, and maintenance, with experience supporting Epic or other healthcare enterprise systems. Experience in an academic medical center, healthcare or similar regulated environment. Strong understanding of data security and integrity principles. Experience with disaster recovery and business continuity planning for databases. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. 5+ years of experience in healthcare database administration, with advanced knowledge of Epic modules and SQL performance optimization.
Salary Range
$90,000+ depending on qualifications
