Patrol Officer I

The City of Independence is seeking applications for the position of Police Officer I for work in the Police Department. Under direction, patrols the city in the enforcement of law and order. Essential duties and responsibilities include investigating and preparing reports of complaints and accidents; issuing citations and making arrests; responding to crime, accident, and emergency scenes as dispatched; serving subpoenas and warrants; controlling traffic and crowds; appearing in court; booking and transporting prisoners; taking fingerprints; and performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications include the ability to learn departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws, regulations, and police literature; the ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action; the ability to write clear and accurate reports; the willingness to complete extensive training; and physical agility. Education and experience requirements include completion of high school or GED, an associate's degree preferred, familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, and two years of experience in law enforcement preferred.

Special requirements include a current Kansas driver's license, being 21 years of age, possessing provisional certification, completing Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center within one year after initial employment, completing any advanced training as assigned, and maintaining KLETC certification. The individual must be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekends. Physical requirements primarily involve moderate to occasionally intense physical effort, and the individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, crouch, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time. Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc.

The salary range for this position is $19.05 to $27.62 per hour plus benefits, depending on experience and qualifications. Application deadline is open until filled. The City of Independence is an equal opportunity employer.
