Duties, Responsibilities & Other

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : The Project Manager V position is the entry-level role within KCI's Energy Project Management career path, designed for individuals developing their project management expertise. This role involves managing smaller-scale projects with limited subconsultants and scope, serving as a foundational opportunity for learning and growth under the guidance of senior Project Managers. The Project Manager V is a key contributor to project success, responsible for coordinating technical staff, managing subconsultants, and liaising with vendors and suppliers to ensure seamless project execution from initiation through completion. Strong organizational skills and an eagerness to develop in a dynamic team environment are essential for this role.

  • Key Technical Skills Required

Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills, including monitoring project billing and related expenses.

  • Ability to effectively manage and lead a team of designers and field staff, ensuring daily communication, collaboration, and alignment.
  • Oversee and manage activities including task prioritization, tracking progress, and timely / submittal completion.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and internal project teams.
  • Working knowledge of power distribution systems, including design, permitting, and construction standards.
  • Safely lead damage assessment efforts following significant weather events, including office and field activities.
  • Lead quality control initiatives and streamline team workflows to meet standards and client expectations.
  • Motivate and train team members in new skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to minimize delays and ensure compliance.
  • Experience with project management tools / systems (e.g., Maximo, SmartSheets).
  • Familiarity with overhead and underground power distribution construction processes.
  • Experience coordinating with DOT and other utilities on major roadway projects; familiarity with DOT plan submittals and review processes (30 / 60 / 90 / 100 design stages).
  • The Key Responsibilities Of This Role Include
  • Project Management and Leadership : Manage all aspects of the project(s) including technical staff, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure timely and successful completion.

  • Develop and communicate the Project Management Plan, outlining objectives, scope, schedule, budget, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Develop project-specific scope of work and contract documents compliant with client requirements and industry standard of care.
  • Manage project scope to align with client expectations and requirements.
  • Maintain project schedules, proactively addressing delays or conflicts to minimize impact.
  • Monitor budgets and expenditures, applying cost-control measures as needed.
  • Uphold high-quality standards, oversee QA processes, and ensure adherence to standards and project specifications.
  • Serve as primary client contact, maintaining open, timely, and professional communication.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to drive project success and foster teamwork.
  • Manage compliance with contract scope, schedule, and change orders.
  • Allocate resources efficiently to meet project demands.
  • Identify and manage project risks with mitigation plans.
  • Conduct risk assessments and prepare contingency plans.
  • Training, Development, And Compliance : Mentor less experienced staff, comply with all KCI policies and procedures, contribute to project safety plans to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Financial Management And Reporting : Negotiate contract terms with clients / subconsultants; develop project schedules; manage contracts; report monthly results to Sr. PM or Practice Leader; achieve / utilize budgets; track and report progress; deliver projects on time and within budget; manage WIP / AR with Finance and Operations input; set up new projects and provide weekly data; seek efficiency and cost reductions.
  • Business Development And Marketing : Participate in opportunity evaluation, consultant selection, and proposal preparation; identify new opportunities, coordinate presentations, and promote KCI capabilities; assist with project closeout with marketing materials; engage in industry / community organizations.
  • Project Execution And Technical Oversight : Fully manage project management and technical deliverables; compare field data to design plans; conduct site visits and data collection; prepare design deliverables; read / interpret technical documents; make decisions on issues; stay informed on state / municipal policies and guidelines.
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (AEC) with a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or 6 years of equivalent experience. Master's degree preferred.

  • Participation in continuing education and professional development; leadership potential; strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; technical knowledge in the project domain.
  • Knowledge of project management software / tools and ability to develop comprehensive project plans and documentation.
  • Understanding of industry standards for PM, QA, and safety; strong problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Certificates, Licenses, And / or Registrations : Successful completion of the KCI PM Training and Contract Training for current employees or ability to complete within six months for new hires.
