Executive Director
Maureen Joy Charter School (MJCS), founded in 1997, is one of the first charter schools approved by the state of North Carolina and proudly stands among the longest-standing charters in the state. For over 25 years, MJCS has served children and families in East Durham, ensuring that every child particularly those historically underserved has access to an excellent education rooted in equity, community, and joy.
MJCS serves more than 600 students in grades K8, the majority of whom are Black and Latin(e). Families choose Joy because of its deep community roots, its commitment to equity, and its tradition of cultivating both academic excellence and a strong sense of belonging. Many alumni return to Durham as leaders, educators, and parents, continuing the cycle of impact.
Today, MJCS is at an inflection point. The school is focused on systems, strengthening enrollment, and accelerating student achievement. At the same time, MJCS is reimagining the student experience through human-centered design. By engaging students and families in co-creating educational pathways, MJCS is leveraging the latest science of learning and insights from the future of work to build a more equitable and future-ready school environment.
The next Executive Director will be the architect of MJCS's next chapter turning this moment of transition into a moment of transformation. They will build on the foundation while positioning Joy as both a beacon of excellent education and a learning lab for future-ready learners and leaders, modeling innovation in public education.
