Police Officer

The City of Plymouth is looking for motivated professionals to uphold state and local laws, provide timely response and appropriate public safety services at all times and to demonstrate and maintain effective relations with the public.

Plymouth Police Department has a long history of providing high-quality service to our 82,000-member community, and in return, the officers receive strong community support. PPD has an authorized staffing of 82 officers with ample opportunities for career enrichment and a culture of training resulting in an average of 100 hours of annual education for each officer.

Lateral applicants can anticipate an accelerated hiring process. Compensation will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain effective relations with the public.
  • Initiate and participate in community engagement activities to continue positive community relationships.
  • Adapt communication to the audience, listen carefully, use respectful language and tone, and build rapport to diffuse situations.
  • Participate in citywide training to strengthen interpersonal, communications and leadership skills.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to Plymouth residents, business owners and visitors.
  • Demonstrate understanding and respect for the diversity of the community, co-workers, and supervisors, including individuals with disabilities or whose first language may not be English.
  • Respond to a wide variety of service calls with appropriate actions, initiative, judgment and use of force when necessary.

  • Investigate and document reports of domestic disputes, prowler / trespassing, disorderly conduct / public nuisance, reports of intoxicated person, missing / found person calls, traffic accidents, burglar / fire alarms.
  • Respond to reports of serious crime (robbery, assault, rape, burglary, etc.) and other service calls as assigned.
  • Provide emergency service to protect life and property :

  • Rescue victims in life-threatening situations.
  • Provide emergency medical service (first aid) at scene of accident / crime.
  • Respond to emergency, non-routine service calls and manage crowd control at demonstrations, protests, or emergency scenes.
  • Investigate suspicious circumstances by gathering evidence and documenting information.

  • Detain and interview suspicious persons; observe and report potential trouble spots; investigate public nuisances.
  • Perform arrests at scenes of crime / accidents :

  • Place individuals under arrest, conduct rights advisement, interview, transport, and booking processes.
  • Conduct preliminary crime / accident investigations and follow-up activities as assigned.

  • Search scenes for physical evidence, secure scenes and evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and assist investigators in follow-up.
  • Take statements / confessions; participate in serving warrants; perform stake-out surveillance.
  • Identify physical and safety hazards that affect the community's well-being.

  • Investigate and arrange removal of abandoned or stolen vehicles; inspect and report public safety hazards (e.g., broken water mains, gas mains, power lines, etc.).
  • Enforces traffic laws :

  • Write traffic citations or warnings; enforce parking and related laws; participate in traffic pursuit.
  • Conduct routine patrol activities and administrative / non-patrol work as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth's CIVIC values and support the city council's strategic priorities.
  • Must be eligible for licensure under Minnesota P.O.S.T. rules by start date.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication.
  • Must possess valid Minnesota Driver's License without recent significant traffic violations.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Must pass physical and psychological examinations for this position.
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Very Frequent : standing, sitting, walking, lifting, pushing / pulling, carrying, kneeling, crawling, crouching, reaching, handling, repetitive hand motion, and stationary desk / bench work with neck bent forward.
  • Frequent : climbing, use of arm muscles over extended periods, overhead work.
  • Weights Lifted / Carried : ability to lift / carry 0-100 pounds and move items up to 100 feet.
  • Job Requirements :

  • Working outdoors, indoors, near fumes / vapors; driving city or personal vehicle.
