Job Description

The City of Renton has a fantastic opportunity for a responsible Lead Maintenance Custodian to join our Public Works team. The position performs a variety of day-to-day maintenance and custodial operations for City buildings and facilities. As a leader within the Facilities group, you'll be a part of a 33-person team responsible for roughly 750,000 square feet of building maintenance throughout the city. A few of the duties of this position will include :

  • Performs general maintenance such as : basic HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and plumbing.
  • Variety of custodial duties such as sweep, scrub & mop floors; wash windows, counters & walls; empty & clean waste receptacles; clean restrooms; assist in gym floor repair and refinishing.
  • Train, provide work direction, order supplies, and schedule staff.

The Lead Maintenance Custodian schedule is Friday - Wednesday 4 : 30 AM - 1 : 00 PM. With the schedule changing in the first quarter of 2026 to Friday - Wednesday 6 : 00 PM - 2 : 30 AM.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Perform a variety of duties related to the day-to-day maintenance and custodial operations of City buildings and facilities; train and provide work direction and schedule regular and temporary maintenance custodial personnel as assigned; delegate and prioritize work.
  • Maintain central supplies storage area; maintain adequate inventory levels of maintenance and custodial supplies
  • Perform minor repairs to buildings, fixtures, light bulbs, replace ballasts; report major repair and maintenance needs and assist other maintenance and grounds personnel in making a variety of repairs as required.
  • Perform general maintenance in various building trades including HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and painting; perform general and touch-up painting.
  • Perform a variety of custodial duties for assigned facilities according to established schedules; sweep, scrub and mop floors; wash windows, counters and walls; empty and clean waste receptacles; assist in gym floor repairs and refinishing as assigned.
  • Maintain custodial equipment and materials; refill various restroom dispensers, including paper towels and soap; clean and sanitize restrooms including toilets, urinals, sinks, walls, stall doors and countertops.
  • Remove leaves and debris from facility roofs, gutters and downspouts.
  • Remove dead rodents, spider infestations and human and animal waste from City facilities.
  • Adjust and arrange furniture, tables, chairs and equipment; set up facilities for special events and meetings as assigned.
  • Communicate with supervisor, Parks and Recreation staff, administrators and others regarding custodial and general maintenance needs and setup instructions.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and hand and power tools used in general maintenance and custodial work including plumbing tools, vacuums, scrubber, buffer, pallet jack, power steamer, boom lift, paint sprayer, nail gun, carpet extractor, blower, electrical testing equipment and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Assure security of buildings and grounds during assigned shift; turn lights on and off; unlock and lock doors; raise and lower flags.
  • Inspect doors, windows and assigned areas for vandalism, report safety, fire hazards and vandalism as appropriate.
  • Maintain a variety of records related to preventive maintenance, supplies, mileage, work orders, vandalism and hazardous waste records; maintain storeroom; operate a computer terminal.
  • Assist Supervisor with hiring process for facilities team.
  • Correct and guide assigned staff and provide input into staff evaluations.
  • Provide direction and ensure timely completion of duties of assigned staff.
  • Implement the goals of the work group as directed by a Supervisor.
  • Assist with the resolution of complaints and issues that cannot be addressed by the work group.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
  • EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS :

  • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above and 3 years of general building maintenance and custodial experience.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check, driving record check, and national fingerprint-based records check.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs
  • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT :

  • Work is performed in an office environment and / or outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
  • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
  • Work evening and / or weekend hours as needed.
