Departmental Overview

Berkeley is widely regarded as the #1 global university in Chemistry with graduate and undergraduate rankings of the College of Chemistry's two departments - Chemistry and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering - and the disciplines within them ranked as either #1 or #2 in the world. The College of Chemistry was founded 150 years ago in 1872 and is unique in combining Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering within one college, which lends itself to greater collaboration and inter-disciplinary research discoveries. The students and faculty at the College of Chemistry are world renowned and have been awarded 18 Nobel Prizes including five in the last eight years (2018 Frances Arnold PHD 85, 2020 Professor Jennifer Doudna, 2021 Professor David MacMillan, 2022 Professor Carolyn Bertozzi, 2025 Professor Omar Yaghi).

The College Relations & Development department is within the Dean's Office and includes 8 full-time professionals, including the Senior Assistant Dean, that oversee all fundraising, communications, events, and alumni and corporate engagement activities for the College, including the alumni and advisory boards. College Relations & Develop annually raises over $28 million in support from its 20,000+ community members which includes students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, corporate partners, donors and friends.

Position Overview

The College of Chemistry's Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development reports directly into the Dean of the College of Chemistry and is part of the College's senior leadership team and the University's Campaign Management Team, with a dotted line reporting to the AVC, Constituent Programs in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR).

The Senior Assistant Dean sets the strategic direction for all College Relations & Development activities and initiatives, and directly manages staff towards the execution of the College's fundraising campaigns, programs, outreach efforts and results from annual donations to principal gifts, in-person and virtual alumni and donor events, talks / discussions (Berkeley Ecosystems) and receptions, alumni and corporate engagement initiatives (Chemistry Alumni Mentorship Program, Alumni Ambassadors, Alumni Board, etc.) including directly managing the College's Advisory Board, and marketing and communications including the College's websites, annual print publications (Catalyst Magazine & Impact Report),monthly electronic newsletters (Periodic News & Chemical Bonds), special exhibits, and social media channels).

The Senior Assistant Dean manages 7 full-time professional staff and an operational budget of $1.8M, and is accountable for successfully annually securing over $30M+ in new gifts, commitments, and unrestricted budget relieving support for the College's core annual funds. The College's major philanthropic priorities include capital projects and improvements, graduate fellowships and awards, new faculty positions and support, the undergraduate student experience, and initiatives to further enhance diversity, equity and inclusion within the College of Chemistry. The Senior Assistant Dean helps develop donor strategies and proposals in collaboration with faculty and frontline fundraisers within the College and across the university, and personally manages the College's Advisory Board and manages a personal portfolio of the College's principal-major gift donors and prospects with a personal goal of raising $10M.

Responsibilities

The Senior Assistant Dean sets short and long term strategic plans for all College Relations & Development activities and initiatives through subordinate managers and staff. This role directs the execution of the College's fundraising campaigns, programs, outreach efforts and results from annual donations to principal gifts, in-person and virtual alumni and donor events, talks / discussions and receptions, alumni and corporate engagement initiatives including directly managing the College's Advisory Board, and marketing and communications including the College's websites, annual print publications, monthly electronic newsletters, special exhibits, and social media channels. The Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development conceives, creates, develops, implements, evaluates and manages development programs and strategies to meet predetermined philanthropic and engagement goals and objectives, ensuring predetermined goals are met.

This role manages a moderately complex fundraising program through subordinate managers. This role oversees a highly specialized team, a fundraising staff comprised of 7 full-time professionals and related administrative support staff and and has significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals through subordinate managers. As a leader they will determine objectives, direct programs, develop strategies and policies, manage human, financial, and physical resources, and function with a high degree of autonomy. They will proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets and determine strategies for a program with organization-wide impact.

This position is responsible for the full range of development programs and has responsibility for other external relations functions, such as events, volunteer coordination and management and other marketing activities. The Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development oversees and manages the identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and donor prospects. The Senior Assistant Dean helps develop donor strategies and proposals in collaboration with faculty and frontline fundraisers within the College and across the university, and personally manages the College's Advisory Board and a select portfolio of the College's principal-major gift donors and prospects.

The Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development is accountable for successfully engaging its 20,000+ members of its community (students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, corporate partners, donors and friends) and annually securing over $30M+ in new gifts and commitments and unrestricted budget relieving support for the College's core annual funds. The College's major philanthropic priorities include capital projects and improvements, graduate fellowships and awards, new faculty positions and support, the undergraduate student experience, and initiatives to further enhance diversity, equity and inclusion within the College of Chemistry.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Excellent understanding and demonstrated experience implementing and leading successful fundraising campaigns.
  • Excellent knowledge of design and implementation of identification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies and techniques, including gift planning.
  • Excellent skills to conceive, design, implement, and evaluate effective fundraising programs.
  • Excellent skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Ability to expand opportunities for revenue generation and pursue opportunities for growth beyond traditional fundraising approaches.
  • Excellent knowledge of UC Berkeley and the College of Chemistry, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure and current issues of concern and knowledge of issues of concern for higher education, generally, or ability to quickly learn.
  • Ability to understand basic concepts of science and engineering, and a passion / interest for the importance of Basic Science.
  • Excellent knowledge of leadership / management concepts, procedures, techniques and best practices.
  • Excellent leadership / management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
  • Excellent consensus-building skills necessary to develop effective and collegial relationships with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills, including excellent political acumen skills, to build and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Proven skills in guiding and motivating top volunteers and board members.
  • Creativity to devise strategies appropriate for different prospects and situations.
  • Excellent strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, persuasion / negotiation skills and marketing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure within the context of competing interests, maintain flexibility and creativity, and adapt to continual changes.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $200,000-$240,000.

The full range associated with the job classification is $138,200-$271,200.
