Job description

The Department of Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as such, it provides undergraduate / graduate instructions in all fields of Chemistry (Analytical. Biochemistry, Inorganic, Physical). The Department is one out of three (Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that currently holds an American Chemical Society (ACS) certification in the State. The Department directly supports approximately 80majors, both graduate 15 and undergraduate 65 and provides service courses to Department of Biology, Environmental Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nursing, Health Education, and Human Sciences. The Department has developed a Student ACS and National Organizational for Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChe) Chapters for community outreach activities. Primary Purpose of Position The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The appointment will be in the broadly defined area Biochemistry or a closely related field. This is an Exempt from State Personnel Act (EPA) position that includes expectations of excellence in teaching biochemistry and / or courses in related areas to majors and non-majors, advising, and institutional service as well as the establishment of an externally funded research program that will involve undergraduate and graduate' level students. North Carolina Central University is among the top ten historically Black colleges and universities in the nation with a strong history in ACS certification of its graduates. The department emphasizes teaching excellence and is interested in strengthening its research portfolio, which is an institution-wide priority. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; excellent research and analytical skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others; strong knowledge base in Biochemistry and related areas. Minimum Education / Experience The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a related area, and postdoctoral research experience. The applicant is expected to possess or develop experience in the use of modern teaching technologies, such as smart board technology. Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, excellent research, and analytical skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others; strong knowledge base in chemistry with expertise in biochemistry; appropriate experience in teaching university chemistry courses, especially in biochemistry. Associate Professor candidates, in addition to the above, will have demonstrated research and teaching accomplishments and the potential for continuing excellence in both research and teaching.
