Advisory Board Member – Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS)

Location : Prince George’s County, MD & Greater DMV Area (Remote / Hybrid Meetings Possible)

Commitment : Part-Time, Volunteer Advisory Role (2 year term, renewable)

Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS) is a long-standing, community-based program dedicated to inspiring girls to explore, enjoy, and excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Founded more than a decade ago by passionate educators, GEMS helps close the gender gap in STEM by offering hands‑on learning experiences, mentorship, and exposure to real-world science opportunities.

Operating in schools across Prince George’s County, GEMS creates spaces where girls gain confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging in STEM. Through tutoring, mentorship, and experiential learning, the program empowers young women to see themselves as scientists, engineers, innovators, and problem solvers.

As GEMS expands through fiscal sponsorship with Charm City Impact, the organization is forming an Advisory Board to help guide its next chapter of growth, sustainability, and community impact.

Our Mission

To increase girls’ participation, confidence, and long‑term interest in STEM by providing engaging, hands‑on learning opportunities, mentorship, and exposure to diverse STEM careers.

Advisory Board Member Role

Advisory Board Members serve as thought partners, ambassadors, and champions for GEMS. This collaborative volunteer role focuses on helping the project strengthen its programming, partnerships, and visibility.

Key Areas of Contribution

Strategic Guidance

  • Offer insight on program design, partnerships, and strategic priorities.
  • Support GEMS’ long‑term vision and help ensure alignment with its mission.

Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Meet the annual $1,000 give / get commitment through direct donations, fundraising, or in‑kind contributions.
  • Identify new funding prospects and help strengthen donor and sponsor relationships.
  • Community Engagement & Advocacy

  • Represent GEMS in your personal and professional networks.
  • Amplify the program’s story through events, social media, or word‑of‑mouth.
  • Organizational Support

  • Participate in quarterly advisory meetings (virtual or hybrid).
  • Provide feedback to the Project Lead and fiscal sponsor on programmatic direction and impact.
  • Ideal Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to youth empowerment, education, and gender equity.
  • Experience in education, STEM, nonprofit leadership, fundraising, or community engagement.
  • A collaborative and mission‑driven mindset.
  • A willingness to contribute time, expertise, and financial support to advance GEMS’ goals.
  • Previous board or advisory experience is welcome but not required.
