Job Overview

Form carpenters, also known as concrete form carpenters or rough carpenters, play a crucial role in the construction industry by creating the molds that shape concrete into various structures such as walls, columns, and foundations. Their work is essential for ensuring that concrete is poured accurately and safely, adhering to design specifications and building codes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Construct and Erect Forms : Build wooden or metal forms to hold concrete in place until it hardens, ensuring they are secure and properly aligned.
  • Read Blueprints : Interpret construction blueprints and diagrams to determine the dimensions and specifications for formwork.
  • Measure and Cut Materials : Use precise measurements to cut and assemble boards, plywood, and other materials to create forms of the required shape and size.
  • Install Reinforcements : Place rebar and other reinforcements within forms to strengthen the concrete structure.
  • Ensure Safety : Follow safety regulations and guidelines to maintain a safe work environment, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with Team : Work closely with other construction professionals, including site supervisors and laborers, to coordinate tasks and ensure project timelines are met.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Carpentry Skills : Proficient in using hand and power tools, with a strong understanding of carpentry techniques and practices.
  • Mathematical Ability : Capable of performing calculations to determine material quantities and dimensions accurately.
  • Attention to Detail : Strong focus on precision to ensure that forms are level, plumb, and square.
  • Physical Stamina : Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials and working in various weather conditions.
  • Blueprint Reading : Familiarity with reading and interpreting construction blueprints and local building codes.
  • Work Environment

    Form carpenters typically work on construction sites, which may involve outdoor work in varying weather conditions. The job can be labor-intensive, requiring the ability to lift heavy materials and work at heights using scaffolding.

    Most jobs are local in the Boise Idaho Region . Some regional travel may be required dependent on projects.
