SUMMARY: The Grants Director has a passion for growing the organization’s resources to meet the agency’s needs. Working collaboratively with the Grants Operations Manager, the Grants Director proactively seeks out foundation, corporate, and government grant opportunities that align with the organization's mission and programs. While the Grants Operations Manager oversees the life cycle of the grant, the Grants Director leads the Grant Department, providing direct support to the Grant Writers in preparing and submitting compelling grant applications and other funding requests to address the goals in the organization’s strategic plan to increase affordable housing and the resources needed by people experiencing homelessness and others who are precariously housed. The Grants Director must have exceptional writing and editing skills with a proven history of award-winning proposals. The Grants Director must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to support the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal teams, funders, and other stakeholders. The Grants Director provides regular status reports of grants in pending, in process, and submitted.

  • Display adherence to the organization’s mission.
  • Maintain proficient knowledge of the organization’s history and programs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Grants Operations Manager, and program, development, and department staff in overseeing grant applications to include:
    1. Develop strategies with programs and the finance department to seek funding.
    2. Manage submission of grant applications and provide oversight of the award process and its implementation.
  • Assist the development department's strategy to maintain and increase private funding.
  • Assist the development department’s stewardship of private foundation funders.
  • Research and identify renewal and new grant funding opportunities.
  • Prepare and submit funding proposals.
  • Oversee, write, maintain, and steward multi-million-dollar federal grants, and all other public and private grants.
  • Direct organizational efforts in collaboration with the Grants Operations Manager to:
    1. Ensure adherence to all grant and reporting timelines.
    2. Furnish prospective funders with supporting documents.
    3. Manage and maintain timelines, grants, records, reporting, and other documentation utilizing a grants management system.
    4. Work with program staff, finance, and grant accountants to ensure deadlines for reports are met and grants are being spent in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Assist in telling the organization’s story and outcomes to funders and potential funders.
  • Represent the organization to and interface with the funders using a variety of communication formats, including in-person meetings.
  • Present proposals and reports at funder meetings when requested.
  • Write sponsorship packages.
  • Work with the finance department and others in developing complex budgets.
  • Supervise and train the grant writer(s) and other grant staff.
  • Stay up to date on trends in the grants industry to ensure the agency’s success.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (Pending on position and if prior to hire is approved by Chief Executive Officer, a comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum education qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five to seven years demonstrated ability to lead and direct a successful multimillion dollar grants program.
  • High level of computer literacy.
  • Ability to understand and help construct required, often complex, budgets for applications.
  • Experience writing federal, state, city, and private foundation applications.
  • Experience in non-profit social services and program operations is highly desirable.

GENERAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Working in an office/site requires prolonged sitting at the computer workstation, standing, bending, reaching, lifting up to 40 lbs. and some driving. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, calculators, telephones, and other office equipment. It is also required to regularly sit, speak, and listen, the employee is also required to walk, use hands and fingers to type, operate equipment, and maintain records and notes. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

MENTAL DEMANDS: Must handle new and diverse work problems daily. Personal maturity is an important attribute. Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. Must have the ability to listen objectively to people, perceive the real problem and assist in bringing issues to a successful conclusion. Must relate and interact with volunteers, clients, contractors, visitors, and employees at all levels within the Agency.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Environment will occasionally become noisy due to equipment operations and interactions among clients and staff. There may be the possibility of being exposed to communicable disease, possible exposure to verbal abuse or similar behavior from residents/clients. On an as needed basis, employees may be called upon to work outside of the established work schedule or work odd hours. All information associated with the Agency is confidential.
