- Manager of Alternative Investments Division : Investments Classification : Exempt Location : Chicago, IL Salary : $65,000–$80,000 Position Summary : The Manager of Alternative Investments (“Manager”) is responsible for supporting the due diligence activities for the Alternative Investment Portfolios of the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer, including, but not limited to, the Illinois Growth and Innovation Fund (“ILGIF”), FIRST Fund (“FIRST”), and other prospective investment programs.
- The Manager will utilize best practices to evaluate new investment opportunities, assist in evaluating opportunities to optimize investment performance, monitor the current investment portfolios, evaluate the progress toward achieving stated investment objectives, and advise senior management on portfolio construction, investment objectives, evaluation frameworks, and economic development driven by the Alternative Investment Portfolios.
- The Manager interacts with many divisions within the Treasurer’s Office in the interest of achieving underlying investment objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities :
Support the due diligence process for the evaluation of new private market investment opportunities (i.e., venture capital, private equity, private credit, real estate, infrastructure and other alternatives), including, but not limited to, the assessment of fund strategy, team, track record, portfolio composition, risk management, and alignment with investment objectives.Conduct ongoing monitoring of active fund investments, including, but not limited to, performance updates, capital activity tracking, benchmarking, portfolio diversification, and reporting of material developments to inform investment recommendations.Prepare detailed investment memorandums, supporting documentation, and presentations for internal review and senior management decision-making.Create investment reports, summarize consultant evaluations, build financial models where relevant, and develop investment recommendations to senior management in a clear, concise, convincing, and actionable format for relevant portfolios.Conduct research on private market trends, economic developments, and fund performance benchmarks.Support quarterly, annual, and special reporting and cash flow management activities with Investment Operations and relevant Divisions to ensure accuracy across reporting.Assist in conducting monthly, quarterly, annual and special onsite due diligence meetings with relevant investment funds, investment advisors and / or investment consultants.Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the investment policies of the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer, relevant statutory requirements, and other pertinent operating guidelines to ensure effective analysis, reporting, and compliance.Contribute to internal process improvements, analytical frameworks, and market mapping efforts.Represent the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer at stakeholder events that promote private market investments throughout Illinois.Provide thought leadership in addressing modifications to investment policies, investment objectives, investment guidelines, and fund structures as appropriate.Actively collaborate with other internal divisions and external investment managers and consultants to the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer.Perform other duties as assigned which are reasonably related to the duties enumerated above.Specific Skills :
General knowledge about private markets, including, but not limited to, private equity and venture capital industries, deal structures, and the Illinois venture ecosystem.Resourceful self-starter with ability to operate within a small team with high integrity, honesty, flexibility, communication, and desire for continuous learning is a must.Strong written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across divisions and teams.Ability to initiate and oversee multiple projects simultaneously, efficiently, and effectively.Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships and communicate effectively with all levels of staff and the public.Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other standard computer programs.Education and Work Experience :
Bachelor’s degree required, financial / accounting / business concentration a plus; Master’s Degree in business administration / finance / economics preferred; two (2) to five (5) years of experience in investment analysis, alternative investments, financial analysis and / or a related field; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to carry out the duties of the position.Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) preferred.Public sector experience in the above-mentioned fields is desirable.
