Position Summary :
Under the general direction of the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (SVP / CFO) and in accordance with established non-profit accounting protocols and internal procedures, the Controller is jointly responsible for all accounting operations. This includes This includes producing accurate and timely periodic financial reports, maintaining and optimizing the Sage Intacct accounting system, implementing and monitoring a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate financial risk, and ensuring the accuracy and GAAP compliance of all reported financial results. This is a key leadership role responsible for the direct supervision and management of the Accounts Payable Coordinator, Payroll Coordinator, Staff Accountant, and Senior Accountant.
Duties / Responsibilities :
The Controller leads and drives the organization’s core financial functions, with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis : Oversees the preparation and thorough review of monthly financial statements, including journal entries, accruals, Statement of Financial Position reconciliations, and detailed variance analyses.
- Team Leadership : Manages, mentors, and directs the day-to-day work of the Accounts Payable Coordinator, Senior Accountant, Payroll Coordinator, and Staff Accountant.
- Budgeting : Leads the annual budgeting process by collaborating with organizational leadership to gather departmental input and supporting the SVP / CFO through final review and approval.
- Audits & Compliance : Serves as co-lead contact for annual external audits (financial, 401(k), and workers’ compensation), working closely with external auditors to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
- Payroll & Cash Management : Oversees the biweekly payroll review and processing with the Payroll Coordinator and Senior Accountant. Manages daily cash operations, including banking transactions, wire transfers, and ACH / EFT activity.
- Systems & Process Improvement : Leads the development and implementation of new financial procedures, systems, and controls to enhance departmental efficiency and strengthen internal processes.
- Executive Support : Maintains a deep understanding of the general ledger structure and supports the SVP / CFO during absences. Responds to financial inquiries and special reporting requests from the executive team.
- Special Projects : Directs and performs ad hoc financial analyses and projects throughout the year to support strategic and operational goals.
- Attend off-site meetings as needed.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from an accredited university.Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in financial reporting, accounting operations, and / or public accounting.At least 3 years of proven experience in a direct supervisory or management role.Proven knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws, and regulations, with demonstrated familiarity in applying GAAP to the non-profit sector (fund accounting).Highly proficient with all Microsoft Office 365 applications, with an advanced level of skill in Excel (pivot tables, complex formulas, modeling).Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proven ability to meet deadlines and maintain strict confidentiality.Preferred Qualifications :
Master’s degree in finance (or related field) or CPA certification (highly preferred).Experience with accounting for a cultural arts organization, performing arts center, or large non-profit organization.Direct proficiency with Sage Intacct and experience with FP&A platforms (e.g., Prophix), payroll systems (e.g., ADP), and automated expense management platforms (e.g., Concur or comparable banking expense management systems).10+ years of total experience in the accounting field.Extensive knowledge and experience in accounting software implementations or major system upgrades.Benefits & Perks :
